Bridging Minds and Machines: The Next Frontier in AI and Computing
Neuralink Launches Groundbreaking Human Trials for Brain-Computer Interface
Neuralink, Elon Musk's brain implant company, has begun human trials for its wireless brain-computer interface. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had given the company clearance last year to conduct its first trial to test its implant on humans. The study uses a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a region of the brain that controls the intention to move. The first product from Neuralink would be called Telepathy. The company has faced calls for scrutiny regarding its safety protocols and was fined for violating U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rules regarding the movement of hazardous materials.
Rebellions Raises $124M for AI Chip Development, Eyes Generative AI Market
South Korean AI chip startup, Rebellions, has raised $124 million in a Series B funding round to develop its third AI chip, Rebel, and increase production of its data center-focused chip, Atom. The funding round, led by South Korean telecom giant KT, values the three-year-old startup at approximately $658 million. Rebellions will develop the Rebel chip in partnership with Samsung Electronics, aiming to complete its development by the end of the year and start mass production in 2025. The chip will target the generative AI market and hyperscalers.
Meta Unveils Code Llama 70B: A New Peak in AI-Powered Code Generation
Meta's latest update to its code generation AI model, Code Llama 70B, is its largest and best-performing model yet. The tool, which is free for both research and commercial use, can handle more queries than previous versions, allowing developers to feed it more prompts while programming and increasing its accuracy. Code Llama 70B scored 53% in accuracy on the HumanEval benchmark, outperforming GPT-3.5 and nearing the performance of GPT-4. The model was trained on 1TB of code and code-related data and is hosted on the code repository Hugging Face.

Streamlining Lost & Found: Boomerang's Innovative AI Matching Software
Miami-based startup Boomerang has developed software that uses machine learning to match pictures and descriptions of lost items, aiming to streamline the process of retrieving lost items. Customers, including gyms and theme parks, upload images and descriptions of found items, while consumers do the same for their lost items. If a match is found, consumers can choose to pick up their items or have them shipped, potentially speeding up the recovery process and reducing the need for repeated customer service calls.
Building Trust in AI: Safety Guidelines and Personalized Consumer Experiences
OpenAI and Common Sense Media Forge Partnership for Safer AI Usage
OpenAI has partnered with Common Sense Media to develop AI guidelines and educational materials for parents, educators, and young adults. The collaboration will also involve the curation of "family-friendly" GPTs in OpenAI's GPT marketplace, based on Common Sense's rating and evaluation standards. This partnership follows OpenAI's commitment to participate in Common Sense's new framework for rating and reviewing the safety, transparency, ethical use, and impact of AI products.

1 年It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first.
