AI: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same!
Having immersed myself totally into the excitement & curiosity of exploring the unlimited opportunities & exponential benefits of AI - AI: Experience, Learn, Apply, Try Something NEW Every Day - it becomes clearer every day, to me, that despite the significant changes, disruptions or upheavals that new technologies always seem to foist upon the world, the fundamental nature of things often remains constant.
It seems a truism that - “The more things change, the more they stay the same” - expressing the idea that while surface-level changes may occur, underlying patterns and behaviors tend to persist in various aspects of life, from societal trends to personal habits. It's all about getting the BASICS right. About getting back to the basics of life & business.
Welcome to Issue 75 of 1idea
What drew me to expressing the above observation is an idea-storming exercise I am doing with a young DifferenceMaker who introduced me to an incredible collection of authentic music sessions - Tiny Desk : NPR.
I don't know about you, but I had never come across this Tiny Desk : NPR phenomenon before.. and I love surfing channels daily for good music. From the attached article below I am relieved that even a famous rapper had not heard of this facility.
'Juvenile, referencing the excitement around his performance that’s drawn nearly 7 million views. “I’ve been getting so much love,” - What is remarkable? Just weeks prior, the legendary rapper had been unaware of the popular, stripped-down, live music series.'
So, now you know what I've been doing.. immersing myself into listening to as many of the +-1100 Tiny Desk productions as I can - an amazing experience of incredible performances.
Bob Boilen, founder of the Tiny Desk Concert concept in 2008, talked of the serendipity of inviting an artist to their NPR offices to give her a voice - “People strategize and plot things out,” said Boilen. “Sometimes it’s just straight inspiration that makes something great, and not a lot of planning.” Resulting in billions of views on social media.
Which got me thinking back to the 6 Pillars of WISDOMS? that our team have been living and promoting for decades, highlighting that Life & Business still boil down to these 6 pillars: Attitude; Initiative; Inspiration; Leadership; Entrepreneurship; Business Mastery.
As I said: “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. Everything in Life & Business begins with ATTITUDE.. and flows from there. It's all about getting the BASICS right.. and honing your skills from there.
As I write this I am listening to Scarface: Tiny Desk Concert (adult language warning). I'm blown away by this first time hearing them - they clearly live & LOVE music. Not that I enjoy the blue language.
I must say that I really appreciate and personally prefer artists like Norah Jones who appear not to feel the need to use blue language in expressing their artistry. To each their own.
From the NPR is cool! article above we learn - 'The rules are simple: Equipment that amplifies sound or voice, like vocal monitors or Auto-Tune, aren’t allowed. Musicians collaborate with producers on the setlist, and all performers — no matter how many — should fit behind what was Boilen’s functioning desk.'
We also learn that the most watched Tiny Desk Concert, with 128 million YouTube views and climbing, is Dua Lipa: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
From the article - How NPR Tiny Desk Concerts Leverage Their Audience for Artists - we learn how The Power of Music Meets the Power of Influencers: 'As we previously covered, small-scale social media influencers can charge up to $300 per post based on their analytics. Influencers with more than 1-million followers can get up to $50,000 per post. With more followers comes more payment.'
'Of course, more well-known figures such as?Kim Kardashian West are the highest earning influencers. In fact, Kardashian West is paid around $500,000 per post.'
'That’s why influencers with a following of 30,000 people or fewer, also known as micro-influencers, are starting to become the target of smaller, more modestly-sized businesses.'
'Even larger companies and corporations are starting to look towards micro-influencers thanks to their target audiences and committed followers. The main theory behind this shift is largely due to how engagement?has been seen to decrease after an influencer has over 100,000 subscribers.'
Now, the young man who introduced me to Tiny Desk : NPR is someone I have known for a few years:
As far as I am concerned, Tsepo Leroy Dube is destined for big things in his life, whether it be in the corporate or entrepreneurial fields. This young man knows how to 'hustle' - the perfect single word to describe the 6 Pillars of WISDOMS? - Attitude; Initiative; Inspiration; Leadership; Entrepreneurship; Business Mastery. As I said: “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. It all begins with ATTITUDE.. and flows from there. It's all about getting the BASICS right.. and honing your skills from there.
Working with this young man allows a fast-approaching 70-year-old (me in 3 months) to appreciate the challenges facing a 32-year-old in today's world. Given his particular circumstances, when asked whether I advise that he follow the corporate world or the entrepreneurial world, my instant answer was: 'Make yourself available to do both!'
You will read from my endorsement above that I rate this young man highly for what he has already achieved in the entrepreneurial space, and that he would be a CATCH for any visionary corporate. Today, I believe that a youngster like this must keep himself open to all opportunities to enjoy the independence and exponential power of exceptional choice to fulfil his personal ambitions.
I must also say that I have over the years observed that people who are active, who 'hustle', who keep on keeping on, are never that far from the 'top'.

Being a biased grandfather of a 15-year-old hockey-player playing in her school's first team, as I watch her rapid development in this sport, I lay down these same words (you are never that far from the top) of encouragement for her to watch the international hockey players at the Paris 2024 Olympics and to emulate their skills - if she really wants to!
This is in addition to the observation that comes from the recent Paris 2024 Olympics that the margin between winning and coming second is often miniscule - sometimes measured in milliseconds - as powerfully represented in the iconic pic below extracted from the Sports Illustrated video - Noah Lyles Wins Men’s 100m in PHOTO FINISH | Olympics | Sports Illustrated .
And, as in the pic above, the gap between the first and last competitors is often never that big either. The difference can be put down to a range of factors including COMMITMENT, DETERMINATION (really, really wanting it), FOCUS and maybe just a little luck on the day of the event. I marvel at the years and years of dedicated commitment to their training that got the above finishers into this final.
I previously wrote about this observation in Where Do YOU Stand On The Totem-Pole Of Life?
Extract: 'There is often the thinnest of lines between success & failure. Anyone who has played or participated in good, hard, competitive sport at the highest of levels will tell you that there is often the slimmest of margins separating the champion/s (elevated to the temporary front pages of society news) from the also-rans (relegated to the forgotten obscurity of anonymity).'
'I am of the thinking that if +-8 billion people were placed on an imaginary single-line totem-pole, from the most-advantaged person in the world at the top, to the least-advantaged person at the bottom, that perhaps these two extreme distant opposites may actually only be separated by the metaphorical thickness of a single strand of hair.'
As I said: “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. It all begins with ATTITUDE.. and flows from there. It's all about getting the BASICS right.. and honing your skills from there.
Talking about getting the basics right, when it comes to AI's potential effect on our future world, I recommend listening to this entertaining video discussion between Mark Cuban & Jon Stewart - Mark Cuban - AI Industrialization & Drug Transparency with Cost Plus Drugs | The Daily Show (youtube.com) - especially as it relates to containing, and preferably reducing, the cost of critical health care around the world.
