Interesting read. For high-stakes sectors like finance and healthcare I would imagine the extra maintenance is easily worth it just calculate it into the budget ahead of time. What I could see high-stakes industries getting in trouble with is not doing the additional maintenance and then having a decline in output that has a very high cost.
