AI in Military Decision-Making
We are excited to announce our involvement in a new DARPA initiative known as In The Moment (ITM). This project seeks to extend the application of ethical AI into challenging military decision making by developing a framework and approach for aligning AI to key decision-making attributes of medical triage experts. Project success depends both on how well aligned the AI is to expert decision makers, and whether those same experts trust the AI to make and implement decisions.
The ITM project seeks to overcome the challenge of aligning AI models to human decision-makers. Establishing this parallelism between AI and human decision-making drives one of the main project objectives: identifying a set of decision-making attributes on which experts vary, and on which AI can be configured. Our team has been tasked with applying our specialization in the cognitive sciences of expertise and decision making to define the dimensions on which triage experts may reasonably disagree, to support the development of the scenarios where the AI and human experts will be assessed, and to provide general support on expert decision-making. The long-term goal of the project looks toward developing AI which are both competent and trustworthy in military medic decision-making.
