AI Meets Agility: Adapting to Evolving Recruitment Trends and More
BWS Recruitment - Becks Wiggins Stokes
Connecting the right people for success!
From the Director’s Chair
Welcome to the May edition of our newsletter!
Despite the current economic challenges, there has been a notable increase in opportunities for temporary positions this month, which has kept the team busy. This trend reflects a growing need among companies for flexible staffing solutions that allow them to remain agile and efficient in a fluctuating economic environment. We are at the forefront of connecting these businesses with a diverse and talented pool of candidates ready to step in and make an immediate impact. This not only helps our clients navigate through uncertain times but also provides a wealth of opportunities for professionals to engage in meaningful work and further develop their skills.
Recruitment firms are often considered a barometer for the economy, so with permanent recruitment being a bit quieter compared to this time last year, it is very typical that we see an uplift in the temporary area. So, for any Hiring Manager looking for a more agile staffing solution or for any candidates who have been impacted by recent restructures, we're here to support you in leveraging these opportunities to thrive in the current market.
April was an exciting month for BWS as one of our key team members, Kirsty Miller , celebrated her 8 year anniversary with the business. As a recruitment firm it is often the front-line consultants who are more recognised by our clients and candidates, however it is our operations and back-office team that are the glue that holds us all together.
Kirsty joined us back in April 2016 as a Senior Administrator / PA and after a couple of years was promoted to Office Manager and in 2022 moved into her current position as Operations Manager / Bookkeeper. Kirsty has always gone above and beyond in all of her roles and has been an amazing support to the business over the years. We are very lucky to have her as part of the BWS family and we wish her all the best for the next 8 years! Congratulations Kirsty!
Why AI will not (and cannot) replace the recruitment process
Like many industries in recent years, the recruitment world has undergone significant transformation following the emergence of AI-powered tools. While artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionised various aspects of our lives, many are becoming concerned about its impact on society, and whether or not it will ‘take our jobs’. In this blog, we explore how the use of AI can assist and compliment human recruiter's; but never replace them!
AI recruitment tools, now common in hiring, offer undeniable benefits but also highlight areas best left to human expertise.
So, what are the processes that could benefit from AI enhancements?
Job Descriptions and Postings: AI, like ChatGPT, helps draft job descriptions by analysing numerous online examples. However, these AI-generated drafts require human refinement to ensure accuracy.
Applicant Screening: AI algorithms expedite the resume screening process and can help mitigate biases, yet they might overlook 'hidden gem' candidates who excel beyond their resumes.
Candidate Assessment: While predictive analytics aid in evaluating candidate suitability through skills and experiences, AI may struggle with nuanced assessments, particularly in interpreting AI-generated candidate documents, which complicates evaluating communication skills and cultural fit.
Candidate Sourcing/Matching: AI extends recruiters' reach by identifying potential candidates online, yet personal judgment and deep insights, which AI lacks, remain crucial.
On the flip side, a significant drawback of AI in recruitment is that AI-generated resumes and other application materials can obscure a candidate's actual communication abilities and motivations. This complication can also make assessing cultural fit more challenging, potentially leading to inefficiencies during the interview stage.
Intuition and Judgment: AI cannot replicate the nuanced judgments drawn from personal intuition and experience, essential for evaluating cultural fit and personality compatibility.
Complex Decision-Making: AI supports decision-making with data but cannot fully replace the complex human processes that consider intangible factors.
Human Interaction: Subtleties of human communication, like tone and context, often elude AI.
Relationship Building: Unlike AI, humans can forge and sustain interpersonal relationships crucial for networking and maintaining a trustworthy employer brand.
Adaptability and Legal Compliance: AI's fixed programming limits its adaptability in unique situations, and it often lags in keeping up with evolving employment laws, necessitating human oversight.
Handling Candidate Complexity: AI may overlook candidates with unconventional profiles, favouring traditional qualifications instead.
Final Decisions and Negotiation: The ultimate hiring decisions and negotiations, sensitive to subtleties and requiring a human touch, underscore AI's supportive role rather than a replacement in recruitment.
While AI propels recruitment forward, its utility lies in support, not substitution. It enhances processes but cannot navigate the full spectrum of human-led recruitment intricacies. Explore how AI is reshaping recruitment in our full blog post.
A word from our customer's
We are incredibly grateful for the feedback we receive from our clients and candidates at the end of each recruitment journey. It fills us with immense joy to see our clients succeed and thrive. Celebrating these achievements matters because it highlights your success, which is at the core of everything we strive for.
We began discussions with Belinda in mid December last year and by Mid February we had a list of 5 high quality candidates to interview. Belinda trimmed the starting list of 120 applicants down to a number we could effectively interview, this process made our job so much easier and most importantly less stressful. We could not be happier with our chosen CEO and would highly recommend Belinda, her advice and guidance was invaluable.
It was a pleasure to work on this national CEO role, aiding a leading real estate organisation in its continued growth.
Something you might not know about BWS!
As part of our commitment to corporate responsibility, for the past year we have partnered with The Smith Family to sponsor a child's education. Through our sponsorship, we aim to address educational inequalities and provide a child with the necessary resources to succeed academically.
Our hope is that by sponsoring a child from a disadvantaged background, we are helping in some small way to level the playing field and offer them the same opportunities for success as their peers.
We feel our involvement goes beyond mere financial assistance; it is an investment in the future of our community and the broader society. At BWS we believe every child deserves a fair chance at education, and this is a great way to contribute to building a more inclusive and equitable world. This initiative not only aligns with our core values of fostering inclusivity and supporting youth in our community, but also enhances our company's identity and values in the eyes of our stakeholders and the team. We are committed to this cause and excited about the potential changes we can bring about.
