If AI Makes You Quit Writing—You Were Never a Writer at Heart Anyway.

Listen up, I remember learning about Chat GPT4 on December 30, 2022.

And I won’t lie: I s*** my pants like an IBS-suffering backpacker traveling through India with a Delhi belly.

I’ve written a tonne of pointless content as a freelance writer, and I knew Chat GPT4 signaled the slow death of 0.02 per word SEO garbage and crap writers.

Similarly, I believed— like many writers — that this could be the death of the entire content writing profession. You see, Chat GPT4 can do many things: use solid grammar, research easy topics in seconds, and put together ok-ish articles.

AI will change writing, not just content writing, forever; anyone suggesting otherwise is a fool.

If you’re a non-native English writer who writes about laser pens for low-grade content mills at 10$ per 1000 words, you’re probably in deep s***.

I’m an avid reader of the freelance writer subreddit. There are two groups of writers: those who believe AI is an excellent tool for writers, and those who believe AI is the death of writers.

Which group are you in?

Like most writers, I’m not 100% sure. After using Chat GPT4 to help me research in the last three months, I know how bang-average the writing is.

It has no character, style, or substance. It gets things wrong; it doesn't understand nuance; it doesn’t use complex grammar; and its humor is robotic (pun intended).

Although it will improve significantly, it’ll never compete with the skill of an excellent writer who can convey their emotions, wisdom, and ideas through beautifully crafted prose.

If, however, you’re thinking of quitting writing because of the so-called AI threat — I have a serious question for you:

Are you really a writer anyway?

Granted, AI is making things more uncertain, but the self-employed life of a writer has been and always will be uncertain. However, anyone who loves writing, freelancing, and making money online will make AI work for them.

If you’ve already written the profession off, you weren’t destined to be a writer anyway.

And let's be real:

Do you think AI would have stopped Ernest Hemingway from writing?
