Will AI Make Me Dependent and Lose My Critical Thinking?
After several interviews and conversations with professionals in different industries, I’ve noticed a growing concern as artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into our work lives. While many embrace AI’s capabilities, some have this underlying anxiety about becoming too dependent on it. The question isn’t just about efficiency anymore, it’s about maintaining our ability to think critically in this AI-augmented world.
The Critical Thinking Concern
The question is: as AI tools become more sophisticated and advanced in analysing, summarising, and problem-solving, will we gradually lose our ability to perform these mental tasks independently? This concern becomes relevant as more professionals rely on AI for daily tasks such as data analysis, content creation, summarising documents, etc.
Four Key Arguments About AI Weakening Critical Thinking
The four most common concerns from professionals are:

Learning from Past Technology Adaptation
While these are valid concerns, history offers us an interesting perspective. Something that we can learn from.
Similar concerns arose with calculators, mobile phones, computers, and the internet. However, rather than diminishing our capabilities, these technologies have enhanced them when used responsibly and thoughtfully. Think about calculators, it didn’t make us worse at math, instead, it made calculations easier and freed us to focus on the mathematical concepts. The same with the internet, it didn’t make us less knowledgeable, it gave us access to more information than ever before.
A New Perspective on AI
Following the examples of previous technologies, think of AI as a bicycle for the mind – it doesn’t make our legs weaker because we rarely “walk” now, instead, it helps us travel further and quicker. The key lies in how we use these tools, as always. It’s never about replacement, it has always been about augmentation.
The most successful professionals won’t be those who avoid AI out of fear of dependency, but those who learn to use it while maintaining their independent thinking capabilities. The question isn't whether AI will make us lose our critical thinking skills – it's how we can use AI to become even better thinkers.
