The story behind Mentor AI by Remote-First Institute

July 2023, our team at Hackathon organized by LabLab.ai x Google Vertex AI

As we marvel at the transformative power of AI in distributed work, it's essential to understand the journey that brought us here. It's a journey marked by innovation, user feedback, and continuous evolution, all aimed at optimizing the distributed work experience.

  • Our story began in 2018, when we just launched Remote-how, Inc. during our Remote Future Summit. I gave a talk about the "Remote Maturity Scale", and started thinking about a simple way to assess how remote work-ready the company is.
  • In 2020, together with Remote , we launched "Remote Work Audit Framework" - a 20-page guidebook for companies and consultants on how to assess remote work readiness.
  • In 2021, while launching our consulting marketplace at Remote-how, we productized this guidebook into a consulting service. We served dozens of companies (from 沃尔玛 to ING , or 微软 , and dozens of smaller organizations).
  • In 2022, a group of Subject Matter Experts in the #remotework space came together and launched Remote-First.Institute . I was one of them and felt that the moment had come. With the AI boom that arrived a few months later, I knew

we are super close to building the tool, that would democratize access to data-driven insights about team pain points, and offer instant solutions recommendations.

?? First steps

February 2023 with the genesis of the Remote Work Score, an assessment framework to check remote readiness for companies. This tool has been tested with 300+ eary users companies worldwide. We did extensive interviews with 40 of them and listened to our users and realized the need for more personalization and future recommendations. This feedback sparked an idea: what if we could automate this process and make it more widely available?

I had the unique opportunity to team up with four brilliant high school students for the AI Google Hackathon. Yes, you read that right, high school students! Huge kudos to Gerald, Micha?, Miko?aj, and Staszek ????????

These young minds, all of 19 years old, are some of the most talented individuals I've had the pleasure of working with. Their passion for technology and their drive to innovate was amazing! We took our idea to our first AI hackathon with LabLab.ai in June 2023 and launched the Alpha version.

This version featured an OpenAI-powered conversational bot and a scoring system to assess remote work readiness. But our journey didn't stop there.

In July 2023, we participated in the Google Vertex AI Hackathon, a pivotal moment in our journey. Here, we built the Beta version, integrating Vertex AI for sentiment analysis and improving existing Langchain technology to guide user conversations. This marked a significant transformation in our journey, bringing us one step closer to our vision of optimizing the distributed work experience with AI.

Closing thoughts

As we stand on the brink of this AI revolution, it's clear that the future of distributed work is here, and it's powered by AI. With tools like Remote-how AI, we're not just adapting to this new landscape; we're shaping it. We're making distributed work not just possible but efficient, effective, and enjoyable. So, why wait?

I like where this is going. The shorter workweek movement will also no doubt benefit from AI technologies that help optimize and improve productivity plus quality of work.

Is this meant to be used by remote companies or companies that at least allow for hybrid? Put differently, is this not meant for individuals?
