AI-Inbox: The jump-on point: ChatGPT and Midjourney

Hi, my name is Tommy, and welcome to my newsletter; AI-Inbox.

Why I Started This Newsletter

There’s something about AI that has gotten me genuinely excited, in a way no other tech has in the last 15 years. This spark initially lit when OpenAI rolled out their 3.5 turbo version last November. It felt like a big leap forward that shook the tech world, and it almost immediately grabbed my attention.

I decided to take my time, almost a year in fact, before deciding to start this newsletter. I wanted to be sure that my interest in AI wasn’t just a passing cloud. Playing around with applications like ChatGPT, Pi.ai and Midjourney only fueled my curiosity further, and now I’m super excited to dig deeper into how these AI tools actually work at a foundational level.

The possibilities within the AI domain are genuinely unbelievable. In my role as a product manager at SoSafe , I’ve seen first-hand the power of AI. It has the potential to not only enhance and empower how each employee works, but also to handle tasks that previously required a whole team. The potential for boosting productivity and creativity across the board—for employees, organizations, and their customers is endless.

AI-Inbox is primarily for my own benefit. It will act as a forcing function to ensure I stay accountable and on course with my learning. I will also use these newsletters as a mechanism to simplify and communicate my own understanding of what is a very complex topic, but if others find it helpful then all the better.

Thanks, Tommy

What to expect in this newsletter?

Every week, I’ll share insights I’ve gained while delving into the world of AI. Expect quick snippets on key AI terms, explanations of how the technology functions, updates on AI in the news, and profiles of startups leveraging AI to fuel their business.

  • The Jump-On Point: OpenAI and ChatGPT Heard of AI? You’ve likely come across OpenAI and ChatGPT . Open AI’s ChatGPT has already hit 100 million users and is one of the fastest-growing apps of all time. I asked ChatGPT to describe itself in one sentence: “ChatGPT is a conversational AI developed by OpenAI, capable of generating human-like text based on the prompts it receives.”
  • Mind Bender: MidJourney Magic: MidJourney is a generative artificial intelligence program?that allows you to create and craft your own AI art. I recently created my first ever e-book via Canva which stars my son as the main character. A character which was created with only a couple of prompts using MidJourney (see featured image above). For anyone that way inclined, you can check out the e-book here. (I think JK Rowling is safe enough for now). Hot tip* I follow Chase Lean on Twitter; he shares really helpful info on how to best to utilize MidJourney. Check him out at @chaseleantj.

What Is Machine Learning?

Before I dive into any advanced topics like neural networks, or supervised and unsupervised learning I am starting with the basics. Machine Learning is a “Field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed,” according to Arthur Samuel (1959), via Andrew Ng’s ML Course on Coursera.

Deep Dive: Demystifying Machine Learning (ML) using a Practical Example

I took a very simple working example to help me visualize what machine learning is, and how it works.

  • Objective: Create a mobile app to estimate house prices based on features like size, bedrooms, and bathrooms. (This is a hypothetical example.)
  • Input: House details such as size, number of bedrooms, and bathrooms.
  • Output: The estimated price of the house.
  • Machine Learning (ML): Feed a computer system housing data (training data) to learn the relationship between house features and prices.
  • Training: Analyze training data to understand how house features affect its price.
  • Prediction: Post-training, the model can estimate the price of a new house based on its features.
  • Usage in the App: Integrate the trained model into the app, allowing users to input house details and receive an estimated price.
  • Continuous Learning: As more data becomes available, the model continues to learn and improve its predictions, keeping up with market trends.

What Am I Reading?

The Coming Wave” by Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, explores the near future filled with AI innovations. I highly recommend reading this; irrespective of what your stance on AI is, be it highly optimistic, or absolutely terrifying this book is a real real peek into the future. (FYI I am in the former camp ??)

What Am I Listening To?

People I am learning from:

If you have any people you recommend I follow, or references you recommend I check out please just shout. That is all for this week ?? Tommy

I’m doing that deep learning course as well at the moment it’s really good. Have you been looking at Dalle-3 yet?
