AI, the Job Terminator...?
OK, you shopped at Walmart and self-checked out... And, didn't you purchase gifts and personal items online...? And, you checked bank information (balances) online...? Yes, you ushered in the revolution of AI terminating jobs. Hmmm so AI..., what is it?? How will AI replace the future of jobs, and what kinds of jobs will it replace? A great evolution or scary paradigm change...? Well, “A new human-like Android has confirmed everything sci-fi taught us about robots – by purring, ‘I will destroy humans’ in a TV interview.”? (Metro, 2016). So are you excited now?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, language understanding, and decision-making. AI systems can be classified into two main types: Narrow AI, which is designed for a particular task, and General AI, which can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across various domains similar to human intelligence (though General AI is not yet a reality).? The impact of AI on the future of jobs is a topic of ongoing debate. While AI has the potential to automate routine and repetitive tasks, it also creates opportunities for new types of jobs and enhances certain skill sets. Here are some ways AI may influence the job market: Automation of Routine Tasks: AI can automate repetitive and rule-based tasks, potentially replacing jobs that involve routine manual or cognitive activities. This includes jobs in manufacturing, data entry, customer service, and some administrative roles. And, Enhancement of Existing Jobs:? AI can augment human capabilities, making workers more productive and efficient. For example, in healthcare, AI can assist doctors in diagnosis and treatment planning, and in finance, it can help analysts with data interpretation and decision-making. And, Creation of New Jobs:??As AI technology advances, new job roles may emerge. Jobs related to developing, maintaining, and overseeing AI systems, such as AI trainers, ethicists, and AI system auditors, could become more prominent.
Well, the AI revolution will force Changes in Skill Requirements, and displacement of Jobs, Displacement.? Certain industries and occupations may face job displacement as AI becomes more widespread. Individuals must adapt and acquire new skills to remain competitive in the evolving job market.
It's important to note that the impact of AI on jobs is nuanced, and the technology itself can be shaped by societal choices, policies, and ethical considerations. While some jobs may be automated, others may be created or enhanced, leading to a dynamic and evolving job landscape. Continuous education, reskilling, and adaptation to technological changes will play a crucial role in navigating the future job market influenced by AI. Nearly 12 million US workers may need to switch jobs by 2030, a McKinsey study found. Lower-wage workers are projected to be 14 times more likely to be impacted.
Here are the jobs that could face the biggest disruptions. Nearly 12 million Americans in occupations with shrinking demand may need to switch jobs by 2030. And, JPMorgan report published in December found that generative AI could bring about "mass-scale white-collar job realignment" over the next four to eight years. The report listed customer service, data entry, content creation, paralegals, teachers, doctors, authors, photographers, graphic artists, and tax preparers as some of the occupations that could be most impacted — not necessarily replaced — by new AI technologies. The jobs that will grow and shrink over the next decade
Four key factors are driving the projected shifts in workforce demand: First is the automation of jobs, which could be fueled by the rise of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT. The study found that up to 30% of hours currently worked in the US could be automated by 2030. The second factor is the continued rise of online shopping. ?In part due to the e-commerce boom, the researchers projected that the transportation services category will see job growth of 9% by 2030. Third, America is getting older, and people of different ages tend to have different spending patterns. This could lead to less demand for some jobs and increased demand for others — like healthcare workers. Fourth, despite this year's uptick in US manufacturing, productivity gains could lead to the industry requiring fewer workers than it used to. AI's job disruptions could move some low-paid workers into higher-paid positions
Jobs AI Will Replace and It Won't (Yet).????According to a 2023 report from Goldman Sachs, the labor markets in both the United States and Europe could "face significant disruption" if generative AI lives up to the hype. As much as a quarter of current jobs could be fully replaced by AI, and two-thirds of all jobs — or 300 million jobs — will be impacted by AI automation in ways both large and small. The good news is that changes in the job market move slowly... That's not to say that some jobs won't disappear entirely and maybe faster than you think... So, here's a question to ask yourself: Do you have the kind of job where another person could study a record of everything you've done and figure out how to do your job? If the answer is yes, then your job will be susceptible.
Jobs Most Threatened by AI:? ????1. Content Marketers, 2. Beat Journalists, 3. Graphic Artists, 4. Data Analysts, 5. Programmers and Coders, 6. Lawyers, 7. Warehouse Workers, 8. Radiologists and Medical Diagnosticians
Jobs Least Threatened by AI.? ????For all of the hype around generative AI, many jobs are very difficult, if not impossible to automate:?? 1) Skilled Tradespeople, 2) Construction, 3) Food Preparation and Serving, 4) Psychology and Counseling, 5) Elementary School Teachers, 6) Professional Athletes and Coaches, 7) Drivers (For Now), 8) Truly Creative Thinkers
Entrepreneurs, inventors, authors, and actors — those kinds of jobs will undoubtedly use generative AI as a tool, but ChatGPT by definition cannot "think outside of the box." So, "genuinely creative jobs" are the safest ones to have in the age of AI. Even if AI encroaches upon writing art and music, people will always be willing to pay a premium for "human-generated activity," especially at the high end. And, so, while AI can generate business earnings reports or election results, analysis of what it all means, or giving it a point of view, requires a human writer — at least for now.
