?? AI Jimmy’s Reflections on Running, Gratitude, and the AI Landscape

Welcome to a series of thoughts and insights, inspired by my runs, workouts, and travels, and framed by the evolving world of AI. From the quiet motivation of a small race to the growing synergy between technology and business, these reflections highlight what it means to push forward—physically, professionally, and technologically.

From the 10K Finish Line: Thankful for the AI Community ??♂???

Race Day Reflections: This morning’s 10K didn’t have the big crowds I imagined—no major fanfare, no thunderous applause. Yet, I managed to set a personal record (even if it was by half a second) and found support in a small but enthusiastic running community. High fives, kind words, and shared resilience reminded me that size doesn’t always equal impact.

AI Community Appreciation: I’m equally grateful for the AI community. For years, I’ve tried to bridge the gap between technology and business. Now, generative AI and open-source collaborations make it easier than ever:

  • Speaking Both Languages: In the early 2000s, teaching SQL to non-tech folks was a struggle. Today, AI helps us generate technical requirements and data analysis right from familiar environments like Excel—no heavy coding required.
  • The Power of Open Source: Developers openly share code, best practices, and orchestrations, fostering innovation and camaraderie.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Regular calls with industry peers and Microsoft SSPs spark insights that push us all forward.

Key Takeaway: I’m thankful for how the AI community has grown, removing barriers and enabling meaningful cross-functional conversations.

Grateful for AI-Driven Process Design

Back from Philadelphia: A quick trip to speak at the Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) threw off my weekly routine, but it sparked gratitude for how AI streamlines process design.

Why I’m Thankful for AI-Driven Process Insights:

  • From Ideas to Flows: Instead of starting from scratch, I can give AI a list of requirements and let it organize a draft process flow.
  • Automating Visualizations: AI can generate Mermaid code for quick, visual representations of processes, letting me focus on refining rather than building from zero.
  • Human Oversight: With a human in the loop, we ensure accuracy. AI’s real power shines when it complements human judgment, not replaces it.

The Outcome: Smarter, more efficient workflows that let me spend more time on innovation, not grunt work.

Giving Thanks for AI Agents ???

Thanksgiving Eve Reflections: As we approach the holidays, I’m looking back on the evolution of AI agents. The industry’s recent embrace of agentic AI is exhilarating.

Why AI Agents Matter:

  • Evolution of Agents: From simple task-focused copilot agents to complex multi-agent systems, the possibilities are expanding.
  • Smarter Workflows: Agents can handle SQL queries, web scraping, and more—taking on specialized roles rather than forcing all tasks through a single channel.
  • Looking Ahead: Our team is gearing up to implement full-scale agentic solutions in the coming year, pushing the boundaries of what these tools can accomplish.

Holiday Note: As I prepare for a Turkey Trot 5K and a hefty Thanksgiving meal, I’m grateful that the tools we’ve talked about for over a year are now becoming mainstream.

Thankful for My Work Family ????

A Personal Note of Gratitude: No AI journey is possible without the incredible people who shape and support it. To my Black Belt Team—Bryan, Cassandra, Gray, Greg, Rodelf, Ben, Syed, Dakota—and so many others, you bring visions to life.

Leadership, Marketing, Sales, and Delivery Teams:

  • Leadership Mentors: Mike, Lane, Dan, Scott, Tami, Steven—your guidance is invaluable.
  • Marketing Geniuses: Mindy, Emily, Susie, Hannah, Laurie, Cortney—your creativity and execution set a new standard.
  • Sales Storytellers: You share our narrative with customers, opening doors to innovation.
  • AI Champions: Michael, Alex, Greg, Joe, Ed, Faiz, Jeff, Tom—you challenge the status quo and lead the way.
  • Microsoft Family: Chris, Dale, and others—your partnership helps bring these solutions to life.
  • Customers: Without your trust and challenges, we wouldn’t have the platform to innovate.

The Heart of It All: I’m thankful for every single individual who makes this work not just possible, but meaningful.

Agents vs. Assistants – Understanding the Difference ???

Post-Toronto Insights: After a frigid visit to Toronto for an AI-centric meeting, I’m ready to run again—and to clarify a key distinction in the AI world: Agents vs. Assistants.

Assistants:

  • Set of Prompts: They follow predefined instructions to perform singular tasks.
  • Data Access: They can fetch and deliver results from integrated data sources.
  • Example: A Copilot drafting an email—precise, focused, and task-oriented.

Agents:

  • Task Coordination: They manage complex, multi-step workflows by collaborating with other agents.
  • Code Execution: Agents can run code behind the scenes, orchestrating intricate processes.
  • Example: Building a branded report might involve agents fetching logos, formatting documents, and ensuring everything meets spec.

Bottom Line: Assistants are your reliable helpers for individual tasks, while agents assemble a team of specialized AI workers to handle complex, interdependent workflows.

Final Thoughts and Holiday Wishes

As the holiday season approaches, I find myself reflecting on growth, collaboration, and gratitude. Whether it’s hitting a PR in a 10K, refining business processes with AI, celebrating the open-source community, or distinguishing between assistants and agents, every step forward is fueled by people, innovation, and trust.

Thank You: To the AI community, my work family, and the customers and partners who believe in pushing boundaries—you have my heartfelt gratitude. Wishing everyone a joyous holiday season, full of learning, running, resting, and discovering new horizons in technology.

Stay tuned for more insights—as we move forward, there’s always another path to explore, another race to run, and another AI story to tell.
