Hey everybody!
Not coming to you from a run today, but rather from a workout. ?? I had the opportunity to present at the Microsoft Training Center (MTC) recently, talking about visions for the future and exploring what AI can do. While I love diving into AI use cases, today I want to share when Generative AI might NOT be the best choice.
Today's Insight: Understanding When AI Falls Short ??
During the session, a client asked about managing random variations—such as unpredictable customer behaviors or process variabilities. While AI can do many things, there are certain scenarios where it might not be the best fit.
Probabilistic vs. Deterministic Models
In AI, we often talk about two concepts: probabilistic vs. deterministic models. Here's how they apply:
?? Probabilistic Models (Random Elements)
Think of probabilistic models like rolling dice ??—there's inherent randomness. For example, you might try to predict outcomes, but variations are expected, much like the unpredictability of casino dice throws. Generative AI often has probabilistic tendencies, where outcomes aren't guaranteed to be the same each time.

?? Deterministic Models (Fixed Patterns)
A deterministic model, on the other hand, is like a clock ???—it follows a strict, predictable path (1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds). For highly variable processes, Generative AI may struggle to deliver reliable results without added structure, like a prompt flow to guide it along.
When Not to Use Generative AI
If there's a lot of variability or unpredictability in your process, it's often better to focus on process optimization first. Look for areas where automation might simplify things or eliminate repetitive tasks. My approach?
Final Thoughts
Generative AI has its strengths, but it's not always the right tool for unpredictable scenarios. Understanding the difference between probabilistic and deterministic approaches helps you know when AI can truly add value.
That's it for today! I'll catch you all after my run this weekend. ??♂?
