New AI System Can Design Hypersonic Weapons By Itself Without Human Intervention

Not all innovation is necessarily "good for humanity". The hypersonic missile is really such an example, where A.I. begins to take the wheel. This could lead to a "Terminator" style scenario of A.I. taking over control of critical military decision making thereby becoming an existential risk.

While some?claim the second Cold War ?is already beginning, experts say, and many of the battles are being fought with economic weapons, that’s not to say that China doesn’t have a significant advantage in the artificial intelligence of its military.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has posed a new challenge to a market recovering from the uncertainties of the pandemic. The invasion has also shown how artificail intelligence is more implicated in human warfare and conflict than ever before, from cybersecurity, to facial recognition on the front lines to the A.I. of military tactics.

This Op-ed will focus on a case in point that was widely reported this week.

According to a Chinese Study,?AI on its way to replacing humans in hypersonic weapon design.

What does that even mean?

On March 25th, 2022 it came out that Chinese researchers claim to have developed AI system that can independently design hypersonic engines. For many of us, this reminds of the sci-fi Terminator movies.

There, Skynet is a fictional artificial neural network-based conscious group mind and artificial general superintelligence system that serves as the antagonistic force of the Terminator franchise. In the first film, it is stated that Skynet was created by Cyberdyne Systems for SAC-NORAD. In reality, we have the People’s Liberation Army, the PLA.

  • PLA scientists say artificial intelligence could write flight algorithm within seconds and be 10 times more accurate.
  • Even back in October, 2021 it was said that the system would need considerable computing power but ‘is feasible’ based on current technology.

Chinese researchers have made significant progress in building an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can design new hypersonic weapons by itself, according to the team behind the project, according to the SCMP.

Now in 2022, A new paper published in a journal run by China’s aerospace defense industry claims that Beijing has made significant progress in building an AI (artificial intelligence) system that can design new hypersonic weapons autonomously.

The research team, led by professor Le Jialing with China Aerodynamics Research and Development Centre in Mianyang, Sichuan, published its findings on March 16 in the?Journal of Propulsion Technology, a peer-reviewed publication run by China’s aerospace defense industry.

A.I. is Changing the Future of War

Without human intervention, the AI machine built a knowledge base of its own to aid the development of new engines for hypersonic missiles or planes that could travel longer distances at much faster speeds, according to its creator.

The Sichuan-based research team said that their AI system could identify most of the shock waves produced during hypersonic wind tunnel tests and that it had independently built without human intervention a knowledge base to develop new engines for hypersonic missiles or even in future planes.

That academics are saying AI is responsible for “doing it by itself” is very peculiar. We have not yet arrived at any technological Singularity, after all.

But when you understand the war simulations and engineering methods, it begins to become more clear why A.I. is doing so well in this regard. Hypersonic wind tunnel tests produce thousands of images per second, which then must be manually scrutinized pixel by pixel by researchers to uncover theoretical or engineering problems. As such, this traditional human method can be laborious, time-consuming and costly.

The full article may not be appropriate and is too long an Op-Ed for LinkedIn, but if you are interested you can read it here.

It's a bit crazy that these stories aren't being taken seriously. The reality is China has an absurd Terminator AI Advantage in the New Cold War. While we focus on a regional invasion, we miss some of the bigger things that are happening in the world today. Europe and the U.S. are no longer the center of the world, China and India are. The sooner we understand this in the 21st century, the better we'll get at preparing for the future.
