Think AI Is New? Think Again, It’s Been Evolving Since the 1950s
A colleague recently asked,? “Is AI a new thing?” (Don’t roll your eyes, not everyone knows)
So here it goes AI isn’t new. In fact, its roots go all the way back to the 1950s, when visionaries were already dreaming of machines that could think. What’s new, however, is the world’s sudden realization of AI’s true potential. And yes, you’re right, AI has had a rocky past, but the pieces have finally come together for it to truly take off.
But why now? What changed after 70 years of fits and starts?
AI had early successes, like neural networks mimicking how the brain processes information. But the excitement was short-lived. By the 1970s and again in the 1980s, AI hit two major “AI winters,” periods of disappointment where the hype simply couldn’t live up to the technological reality. Why? Simple: We didn’t have the computational power to support the grand ideas.
In the early days, AI’s ambition outpaced our hardware. We had brilliant minds working on AI, but our machines couldn’t process data fast enough to make AI practical at scale. That’s why, despite some early breakthroughs, AI essentially stalled for decades.
So Why Is AI Taking Off Now?
Here’s What’s Changed:
1. Computational Power Finally Caught Up—And Then Some
Let’s get the obvious out of the way: we finally have the computational muscle to make AI real. Thanks to exponential improvements in GPU technology, cloud computing, and big data infrastructure, we can now process and analyze the massive amounts of data that AI requires. Where early AI systems crawled, today’s AI sprints, processing data faster than we ever thought possible.
But here’s the thing, it’s not just about compute anymore.
2. The Rise of LLMs: AI Got Popularized by Tools Like ChatGPT
The real spark in AI’s current boom? Accessibility.
In the past, AI was locked behind complex algorithms and required specialized skills to use effectively. Enter Large Language Models (LLMs)like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and suddenly, AI became easy to use.
These LLMs can generate human-like text, answer complex questions, and understand context in a way that was unthinkable just a few years ago. What OpenAI did wasn’t just another AI advancement, it democratized AI. It put powerful, intuitive AI tools into the hands of millions, from developers to non-technical business leaders.
ChatGPT and its ilk have given people a direct, hands-on experience of AI’s capabilities, making it approachable and showing how AI can fit into everyday workflows.
This wasn’t just an incremental step forward, it was a leap. The moment people realized they could have conversations with AI or generate entire reports using natural language commands, AI stopped being a niche technology. It became something anyone could use, opening the door for widespread innovation.

3. AI Is More Than Hype, It’s Solving Real Problems, Profitably
Another reason AI is booming now? It’s no longer just an academic exercise or a futuristic dream. AI is delivering real-world solutions at scale, and profitably.
Today’s AI systems are deployed in industries ranging from manufacturing to healthcare, where they’re solving high-ROI problems. Think predictive maintenance that saves factories millions by preventing breakdowns, or AI-driven healthcare diagnostics that can detect diseases earlier than ever.
AI isn’t just a cool tool anymore, it’s a business imperative. Companies that ignore AI today risk falling behind as others leverage its power to cut costs, improve efficiency, and gain competitive edges.
This Isn’t Another AI Cycle. It’s the Real Deal.?
We’ve seen AI go through cycles of excitement and disappointment before, but this time is different. The pieces are in place. With compute power fully unlocked, tools like ChatGPT making AI easy to use, and AI solving real-world problems across industries, the stars have aligned.
If you’re thinking, “It’s just another tech wave, it’ll pass,” I’ve got news for you, this wave is going to reshape everything. This is the era where AI finally lives up to the hype, and companies that embrace it will dominate.
From University Projects to Global Impact
Let me get personal for a moment. Back in university, I worked on AI languages and linguistics, fields that were considered niche at the time. I spent countless hours imagining the possibilities. Fast forward to today, and it’s surreal to see these fields being hailed as “new” again.?
But they aren’t new, they’ve just matured into something far more powerful and relevant than we could’ve imagined back then. What was once theoretical is now reshaping industries in real time. The promise of AI that we dreamed about decades ago is becoming a reality, and it’s exciting to see the world catching up to it.
Why You Should Care: AI Isn’t Optional Anymore
AI is no longer a luxury or a nice-to-have. It’s a must-have for companies that want to stay relevant and competitive in the future. The convergence of computational power, democratization through LLMs, and real-world applications has made AI indispensable.
And if you’re still asking yourself whether AI is just a trend, here’s my advice: Don’t wait to find out. The future is already being written by AI-driven companies. The question is: Are you ready to join them?
That’s all for now folks. Till next time stay connected!?

1 个月Congrats on the excellent article Nassia Skoulikariti. Indeed, AI has existed for a long time, but the current context with the internet and the abundance of data available for training has contributed to its popularization. More than that, the chat-based approach has greatly helped, as it transformed something out of science fiction movies into something we can use. AI has become a great partner in many of our daily tasks. However, we still need to keep an eye on the side effects of AIs, especially regarding biases, which, if not properly managed, can contribute to their perpetuation. In conclusion, education and training in AI are fundamental to further democratize its use. It's not enough to just make tools available; it's necessary to empower individuals and organizations to use them effectively and responsibly. Investing in education and training programs can help create a workforce prepared to face the challenges and seize the opportunities that AI offers. This way, we can ensure that AI benefits society as a whole, promoting inclusive and sustainable innovation.

1 个月I agree AI is here to stay, front and center, as demonstrated on all mobile devices, remembering it has been on android a lot longer than with apple, but apple has solidified its place. There are so many variations AI to consider and also educate on for business adoption, as an example the differences between AI model training and Model inferencing, there also common misconceptions or things being AI when they are actual business rules and not AI. We are at the peak of the hypescape curve, and full of POC’s just like IoT experienced, the interesting phase is coming on the trough of disillusionment, when problems and issues occur, and also the ethics of its use, there is a huge amount of tech companies innparticular making redundancies, are they considering that AI is an alternative the workforce? Very interesting times ahead.
We like the way you've connected AI's past with its present momentum, @NassiaSkoulikariti! It's true, we often overestimate the impact of emerging tech in the short term, but underestimate it in the long term. The accessibility factor you highlighted is key. AI is no longer confined to labs, it's empowering businesses of all sizes. Thanks for the insightful read!
