Why Do Employers Adopt AI Interviews?

An AI interview is conducted primarily or partially using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. These interviews employ software and algorithms to assess candidates' qualifications, skills, and suitability for a position. Unlike traditional face-to-face interviews, AI interviews frequently incorporate pre-recorded video responses, written responses, or interactions with AI-powered chatbots.

AI-assisted interviews use AI to assist human recruiters with tasks such as resume screening, interview scheduling, and candidate data analysis.

Moreover, AI offers the potential for greater objectivity in the hiring process, reducing biases that can often creep into human decision-making. This leads to a higher quality shortlist of candidates with the right competencies.

Additionally, AI-powered interviews can be conducted at scale, enabling organisations to cast a wider net and identify a larger pool of qualified applicants. Companies that have already incorporated AI in recruiting have been able to bring down the cost per hire by 35%.

Types of AI Interviews: What to Expect

AI-Assessed Asynchronous Video Interviews: In this format, you'll record your responses to a series of pre-recorded questions. This allows recruiters to evaluate candidates at their convenience. Expect to be assessed on your verbal communication, body language, and the content of your answers. Keep in mind that you'll only have limited time to respond.

AI-Powered Live Video Interviews: This type of interview combines human interaction with AI technology. You'll interact with a human interviewer, but AI will analyse your responses in real-time. Be prepared for questions that require quick thinking, and expect your communication style and body language to be closely scrutinised.

AI-Driven Chatbot Interviews: These interviews involve interacting with an AI chatbot. You'll typically answer a series of questions through text or voice. Focus on providing clear and concise answers, as the chatbot will analyse your responses based on specific keywords and phrases.

AI Capabilities and Preparation Strategies

Real-time Behavioral and Sentiment Analysis

AI is getting smarter every day, including understanding how humans communicate. Beyond your skills and experience, AI is analysing your body language and emotions to build a complete picture of you as a candidate.

  • Facial Recognition: AI systems can analyse facial expressions to detect emotions. AI can interpret your smile, frown, or even a subtle eyebrow raise. It's more than just smiling for the camera; authentic expressions of enthusiasm and engagement resonate.
  • Body Language and Tone of Voice Interpretation: AI can analyse your posture, gestures, movements, tone, pitch, and pace of your speech, and reveal a lot about your confidence, passion, overall demeanour, and engagement. A confident and open stance can make a world of difference.
  • Response Latency: The duration between a question and a candidate's initial response is a critical indicator of a candidate's preparedness and thought process. Stumbling too long might raise eyebrows, but lightning-fast responses could seem rehearsed.

Preparation Strategies

Understanding how AI reads can help you present your best self. Develop your ability to recognise and manage your own emotions, as well as understand and respond to the emotions of others. Learn to catch the non-verbal cues and be aware of your body language and how it might be perceived. It's better to avoid nervous habits like fidgeting or touching your face.

Like in any other interview, practice maintaining an open and confident posture. While it might sound cliché, genuine enthusiasm and passion are detected by AI. Let your passion for the role shine through in your voice and facial expressions. That said, forced smiles or overly rehearsed responses can be counterproductive.

AI technology can scrutinise candidate responses with remarkable precision, evaluating performance in real time. To excel, candidates must prioritise clarity and conciseness with direct and articulate responses to demonstrate strong communication skills.

Advanced Level Personalisation

Forget the one-size-fits-all interview. AI is changing the game by tailoring the experience to you. Imagine an interview that focuses on your unique skills and experiences. That’s the power of AI.

  • Job-Specific Questions: AI analyses the job description and your resume to generate targeted questions that align with the role’s requirements.
  • Candidate-Specific Feedback: Based on your responses, AI can provide tailored feedback, highlighting your strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Adaptive Questioning: AI can adjust the difficulty and focus of questions based on your previous answers, creating a dynamic and challenging conversation.

Preparing for a Personalised Interview

To excel in a personalised interview, you need to be prepared. Go beyond the job description. Understand the company culture, values, and recent projects. When you respond to the question, tailor your answers by directly connecting your experiences and skills to the specific job requirements. Use keywords from the job description and be ready to discuss how your values and goals align with the company's mission.

Automated Question Generation

AI is revolutionising the interview process by automating question generation, creating a more dynamic and challenging experience for candidates.

How AI Builds Your Question Bank

  • Job Description Analysis: AI meticulously examines job descriptions to extract key responsibilities, skills, and qualifications.
  • Question Libraries: Based on this analysis, AI accesses pre-constructed question banks tailored to specific roles and industries.
  • Algorithmic Question Generation: For a truly personalised touch, AI can dynamically generate questions based on a candidate's resume and previous answers, creating a unique interview experience.

Preparing for the AI Questionnaire

To excel in this environment, candidates should have a deep understanding of the role and the job description, which will help them anticipate potential questions. you should also be prepared to discuss various topics related to the industry and the company to develop a broad knowledge base. By understanding how AI generates questions, candidates can better prepare for the relevant topics and demonstrate their versatility.

Comprehensive preparation is essential to excelling in AI interviews. Leverage AI-powered practice platforms to simulate real-world interview scenarios. Research frequently asked AI interview questions and practise your responses diligently. Understanding potential biases in AI algorithms is crucial, allowing you to prepare accordingly. Additionally, networking with others who have experienced AI interviews can provide invaluable insights and strategies.

Predictive Analytics: Matching You to Your Ideal Role

Improved Natural Language Processing (NLP)

With AI’s improved NLP, you must master the art of communicating with machines to stand out.

Think of AI as a highly intelligent listener. It's not just about the words you use, but how you use them. Here's how AI breaks down your conversation:

  • Keywords: AI picks out specific terms to categorise your answers.
  • Context is Key: AI tries to understand the big picture of what you're saying.
  • Reading Between the Lines: AI can detect your conversation's overall tone and sentiment.

AI creates a comprehensive profile of candidates. To excel, candidates must prioritise clear and concise articulation supported by concrete examples. This strategic approach, coupled with an awareness of AI's analytical capabilities, can significantly enhance job prospects.

Remember, every word counts. By understanding how AI processes information, you can optimise your responses and increase your chances of landing the job.

Going forward..

Job seekers should be aware of their rights and the potential limitations of AI. Understanding how data is collected, used, and protected is essential. Candidates can contribute to a fairer and more equitable job market by staying informed and advocating for ethical practices.

If AI is that smart, then why on earth are candidates still not getting basic responses to applications? Basic: Hi, thanks for your application. Basic: Hi, I'm sorry you haven't been successful this time. The recruitment industry is already in the toilet, and this will not help. If any company tries to interview me with a digital or AI interview, that's not a company I ever want to work for. I'll walk out, I'll pull the plug. I'll make sure other people know that this is an inhumane company that doesn't give a crap about its employees. Give me strength!

What about the design of algorithms that may prevent neurodiverse people get through the system because the algorithms themselves do not understand that not all can work in that system. Unless the creators of algorithms understand the issues, could the new system create a new form of discrimination?

This is an awful idea that takes away any human element to recruiting. Finding the right person for a role is so much more than ensuring they tick the right boxes and have the right qualifications. How can a recruiter expect to get a feel for the candidate if they're relying on an algorithm to read them. AI job interviews are as reductive to the job market as standardised testing is to mainstream education. A lazy, one-size-fits-all approach that is significantly more harmful than any supposed benefit will bring. It's dystopian.
