The AI Latest News

  • OpenAI released new features for ChatGPT & DALL-E. The two new features will allow users to edit images created by DALL-E within ChatGPT and let users see style prompts to get inspiration for their creations. Users can now access ChatGPT instantly without signing up, dive deeper into topics with highlighted links in responses for Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans, and secure their accounts with multi-factor authentication. Additionally, the new "Read Aloud" feature enables ChatGPT to vocalize responses on iOS, Android, and web platforms, making AI interactions more convenient and engaging.
  • OpenAI is expanding its Custom Model program to help enterprises with bespoke AI models tailored to specific industries and tasks. Featuring assisted fine-tuning and custom-trained models, the program aims to maximize AI performance through collaboration and advanced techniques. Success stories include SK Telecom, which improved its customer service AI performance significantly, and Harvey, which developed a specialized legal AI tool that surpassed foundational models in expertise.
  • Google is considering to charge for premium features on its AI-powered search engine. The tech giant may integrate these advanced search capabilities into its existing premium subscription services, which already include access to the Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and Docs. This initiative represents Google's first attempt to place core products behind a paywall while continuing to offer its traditional search engine for free. The move aims to position Google competitively in the rapidly evolving AI sector, amidst rivalry with OpenAI and Microsoft. Despite this potential shift, Google confirmed it is not considering an ad-free search experience, emphasizing ongoing development of new premium services to enhance its subscription offerings.
  • A recent global survey involving 2,000 C-suite executives predicts a reduction in workforce size across thousands of companies due to the adoption of artificial intelligence within the next five years. This Adecco Group and Oxford Economics collaboration found that 41% of executives anticipate employing fewer individuals as AI technologies, including generative AI, become more integral to operations. While AI is seen as a significant disruptor in the workplace, there's a push towards reskilling and redeploying employees to leverage these technological advancements effectively. The survey, spanning 18 industries in nine countries, suggests a mixed impact on employment, with some companies planning to hire AI-skilled personnel while others look to internal redeployment to mitigate job displacement. Despite the optimism of some forecasts about AI creating new job opportunities, the reality of AI-driven layoffs in companies like Dropbox and Duolingo, and predictions of substantial job losses, particularly among white-collar professions, highlights the urgent need for workforce adaptation to the evolving AI landscape.
  • The tech industry faces growing concerns over AI-driven job losses, with notable companies like Google and IBM already making cuts. In response, Cisco, Google, Microsoft, and IBM have formed the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium to tackle AI's employment impact and offer training. Despite these efforts, skepticism remains about the effectiveness of industry-led initiatives in mitigating job losses amidst AI advancements. With a significant portion of companies anticipating layoffs due to economic pressures and AI integration, the job market continues to shift, affecting professionals across sectors.

Inside Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data

The race for AI training data is heating up among Big Tech, with Photobucket, a once-dominant image-hosting site, now negotiating to license its 13 billion photos and videos for AI model training. This marks a shift from tech giants' previous reliance on freely scraped internet data. The AI training data market, currently valued at approximately $2.5 billion, is projected to grow to nearly $30 billion within a decade, reflecting the urgent demand for diverse and legally compliant data to power generative AI models.

Significant transactions, such as Shutterstock's deals with Meta, Google, Amazon, and Apple, ranging from $25 million to $50 million, highlight the burgeoning trade in proprietary content. The emergence of AI data firms like Defined ai, charging $1 to $2 per image and $100 to $300 per hour of video, underscores the value of ethically sourced training data. As the industry grapples with copyright lawsuits and privacy concerns, the focus on acquiring high-quality, consent-based data signifies a crucial pivot towards responsible AI development and innovation.
