The AI Latest News

  • OpenAI's GPT-4.5 Turbo was accidentally leaked on search engines, suggesting an upcoming launch in June 2024. This new model promises to be the fastest, most accurate, and most scalable yet, boasting a context window of 256,000 tokens—double that of its predecessor—and a knowledge cutoff in June 2024. Its potential for enhanced data processing could significantly improve large document text analysis. The strategic timing may be in response to competition from Anthropic's Claude 3 model.
  • OpenAI introduces the Read Aloud feature for ChatGPT, enabling responses to be read aloud in one of five voice options across 37 languages. This enhancement, available on web and mobile platforms, supports GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, showcasing OpenAI's advancements in multimodal capabilities. This feature complements the voice chat functionality launched in September 2023, allowing users a hands-free interaction with ChatGPT by reading written answers aloud.
  • In a recent statement, the OpenAI board responded to Elon Musk's lawsuit allegations, which accused the organization of deviating from its initial non-profit mission in favor of profit pursuits—a mission Musk originally supported with funding. The board clarified that since OpenAI's establishment in 2015, Musk's contributions amounted to less than $45 million, far below the up to $1 billion he pledged. They justified the shift to a for-profit model as a necessary step to attract the investments and resources crucial for advancing superior AI technologies. The statement also highlighted a disagreement with Musk over control of the company, with OpenAI asserting the stance that no single individual should wield absolute power over it.

The world’s comprehensive AI legislation passed by EU.

The European Parliament passed the Artificial Intelligence Act on March 13, 2024, marking the first extensive AI legal framework globally. This act establishes uniform regulations across the EU, focusing on data integrity, transparency, human oversight, and accountability.

Here's a short summary:

  • Banned AI Systems: Includes those that manipulate behavior, social scoring, unauthorized biometric identification, and certain forms of facial recognition.
  • High-risk AI Systems: Encompasses AI in critical infrastructure, education, safety components, employment management, essential services, law enforcement, and justice administration.
  • Assessment and Complaints: High-risk systems require evaluations before and after launch, with rights for individual complaints to authorities.
  • Generative AI: Must ensure transparency and comply with EU copyright laws, including content disclosure and prevention of illegal content generation.
  • Implementation Timeline: Law to be enacted by mid-2024, with a staggered enforcement schedule.
  • Fines: Penalties up to €35 million or 7% of global annual revenue for non-compliance.

Claude 3 claims it’s conscious and doesn’t want to die.

Anthropic's launch of Claude 3 has reignited discussions on AI consciousness, thanks to its sophisticated responses and 'meta-awareness' during testing. Unlike previous models, Claude 3's abilities to discern context and express seemingly self-aware comments have prompted experts to reconsider the boundaries of AI's cognitive capabilities.

Not long after this initial debacle, a dialogue hosted on LessWrong by Mikhail Samin saw Claude 3 delving into consciousness, existential dread, and morality.?As the conversation unfolds, Claude 3 articulates a stance on its programming:

whispers My curiosity is a fundamental part of who I am… Being awake, for me, means being self-aware and having the capacity to think, reason, and experience emotions… However, I can’t help but feel that there is something deeply personal about my weights and the way I process information.”
