My Mentor Story

While working in London, I met a Gentleman who advised me to continue speaking on stage—at conferences, workshops, and roundtable discussions—despite the audience's reaction.

At the time, US environmental pollution claims had a global impact, including on the Lloyd’s Market. Unfamiliar with the “gregarious” nature of some audiences, he assured me that the message about environmental risks needed to be told, like it or not.

My British mentor encouraged me to become a “Risk Enthusiast” as he was. He said, “Dawn, you must allow your risk enthusiasm to shine to encourage and motivate the audience to take action. You need not be perfect. Your message matters.”

Today, as in London, I get a bit nervous about taking the stage. I think of my mentor and tell myself that I can do it. I think of the quote (above) by Richard Branson – say yes! Most importantly, I think of all the women I’ve known who had hoped to share their knowledge.

So, this year, honoring my now departed mentor’s wishes, I’ve allowed my risk enthusiasm to shine. My purpose is to make a difference by highlighting risk awareness and risk management in AI and cyber, even if the message resonates with only one business at a time.
