AI in Hiring: My Experience with ChatGPT’s Role in the Process

Would you believe this? I got hired on a recent project because the coordinator asked ChatGPT: “What is Maria Tran like?” and “What is it like to work with or hire her for a company?” I know because the results were then sent to me.

I recently had a surreal experience: I was hired for a project because the hiring coordinator consulted ChatGPT about me! They asked, “What is Maria Tran like?” and “What is it like to work with or hire her?”

As a nomadic actor and filmmaker, I’m still relatively new to the US market. While I’ve built a profile in independent action filmmaking in Australia and advocacy, I’m still navigating this new landscape. I assumed I was starting fresh, but it turns out, my digital footprint, including my work and online interactions, is already being analyzed by AI.

This experience highlights the increasing influence of AI in hiring. While it offers efficiency and objectivity, it also raises concerns about privacy and the role of human judgment.

I mean, I’m not complaining. It’s quite a succinct depiction of my work that even I haven’t had this level of self-reflection. I’m just glad that I haven’t done anything incriminating or it hasn’t reported anything remotely outlandish that could jeopardize my chances of getting hired.

The below question the coordinator asked gave me a moment of sweat. Once again, on the professional front, I’ve passed the test and I do endorse its approval.

It seems the future is here — whether it’s useful assistance or the looming “Skynet” we always joked about. One thing’s for sure: there’s no escaping the influence of technology, even in hiring decisions. Welcome to the brave new world, where AI isn’t just predicting trends — it’s deciding them.

So for all those creatives who want to make a global impact, it’s time to develop the clarity, action, and body of work that makes you notable in whatever industry you choose. That clarity and career vision really does get you the job.
