AI is here. What are you going to do about it?

AI is interrupting the way business is being done in almost every industry and will continue to do so. We can’t ignore it. How are you addressing it? It’s important to take a proactive approach rather than sit on the sidelines while your employees wonder what the possible effects will be moving forward.?

In healthcare, AI is being used to analyze medical data and assist in diagnosing diseases. AI-powered robots are also being utilized in surgical procedures, enhancing precision and minimizing human error. In manufacturing, AI is streamlining production lines, optimizing supply chains, and improving quality control.??

Businesses of all types are using AI-powered chatbots to handle customer inquiries and provide assistance 24/7. And not to mention, AI creates written content too. With limitless applications, it’s safe to say most of us must figure out a plan to either utilize it or reassure our workers that it won’t affect them. ? ?

Be proactive and transparent. ? ?

While AI is benefiting businesses, it is also raising concerns about job displacement. There is a common fear that some positions will be either replaced or drastically changed due to this new technology. And it’s a fear based on reality. In recent months, companies have laid off thousands of employees due to AI. It is our responsibility as leaders to think with intention when communicating internally about the topic. ? ?

We must start by recognizing that while AI is the next shiny object, it will never replace human collaboration and human-to-human contact. It is a tool, and we must approach it in a talent-centric way. Be transparent with your employees. If AI one day does take their position, they will have appreciated the honesty coming from you. And if you know it won’t affect your organization like it may competitors, reassure your people. If you’re uncertain, communicate that you’re unsure at this point in time. Here are the steps to take when it comes to addressing AI with care:?

  1. How does AI fit into your organization? As a leader, consider how you plan to implement AI into your company. How are your competitors using it? What department can benefit from its application? Remember: AI doesn’t have to lead to layoffs. Human-AI collaboration can lead to innovation and improved productivity.?All in all, it will likely affect at least one aspect of your business and you must think carefully about what it will alter on a macro level. The first step is to take account of these changes.??

?

  1. How will this affect the employee on a micro level? Yes, in some cases, the rise of AI will completely replace human workers. But consider the positives! By integrating AI into workflows, employees can then focus on higher-value tasks that require creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence— which are all not AI’s strong suit. AI can also lead to the creation of new high-paying positions that involve managing the technology.??Ask yourself: How will your chosen AI applications affect specific-level workers? It may be a positive conversation rather than a negative one. Imagine your executive assistant utilizing AI to schedule meetings for you so they can finally do what they're best at– strategizing. It can be a win-win for both parties.??

?

  1. Communicate the change with care. Now that you know how you want to incorporate AI into your business, if at all, and how it will reshape or diminish current positions, it’s time to let them know. Keep in mind that it is a sensitive subject for most.??If you're laying someone off completely, let them know in an in-person meeting. You must ensure they find out from you before anyone else. What’s the worst way to address them? By sending a company-wide email.??If you're planning to keep the worker but alter their duties to incorporate AI, it may be seen as a more significant change to them than to you. Again, sit down with them and let them know how it will benefit you and them, and what they can do instead. Be genuine and transparent.??

______________________________________________________________________________________?

Transparency is directly tied to employee satisfaction in the workplace. Just the same, a lack of transparency is tied to turnover.??

______________________________________________________________________________________

In conclusion, AI is an unstoppable force that demands attention. The key lies in finding the right balance between harnessing AI's potential and keeping humans at the center of the equation. My team at Vertical Elevation is here to help you navigate these issues as you move forward. Take a moment to book an exploratory call with me today.?

Let’s RiSE together,?
