AI Governance: The Responsibility We Cannot Ignore

Melvin Kranzberg’s first law of technology states: Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral. The responsibility of using technology wisely falls on those who develop, deploy, and regulate it.
This responsibility was highlighted at the ongoing AI Action Summit in Paris, where India’s Prime Minister and co-chair, Narendra Modi, emphasized the rapid growth of AI and the urgent need for collective global efforts to establish governance frameworks that uphold shared values, address risks, and build trust.
At this critical juncture, I had the opportunity to complete my certification in AI Security & Governance, a program by Securiti , which provided deep insights into the risks, responsibilities, and safeguards associated with AI adoption.
As Program Managers, our role extends beyond business objectives. We are gatekeepers in the AI revolution. It is our duty to ensure compliance with legal obligations and safeguard individuals from potential AI risks through robust governance frameworks.
What is AI Governance?
AI governance refers to the policies, practices, and processes organizations implement to manage and oversee AI usage responsibly. With increasing regulations and evolving industry standards, it has become essential for businesses to prioritize governance frameworks that ensure ethical AI development.
For example, the EU AI Act establishes a risk-based classification system for AI, mandating transparency, human oversight, data governance, cybersecurity, and ongoing monitoring for high-risk AI applications. Compliance with such legal frameworks is crucial to avoiding regulatory penalties and reputational damage.
Key Components of AI Governance
A structured AI governance program involves data integrity, actor accountability, AI system classification, risk assessments, and continuous monitoring. Let’s break it down further:
1. Model Discovery
Organizations must track AI models in use, their approval status, and training data sources. AI models should be evaluated for compliance with local laws before deployment.

2. Model Consumption & Data Usage
AI models interact with vast amounts of enterprise data. Mapping these data flows, identifying business use cases, and assigning clear ownership and approval mechanisms is vital for security and compliance.
3. Continuous Monitoring
Once deployed, AI models must be protected from adversarial attacks, such as unauthorized data access, data loss, or manipulation. A major challenge is the non-deterministic nature of AI responses, which can lead to hallucinations. Real-time monitoring of AI performance, accuracy, and cost will be a critical governance function in 2024 and beyond.
4. Risk Management
Organizations should leverage dashboards and workflow management systems to assess AI health, triage issues, and initiate remediation. AI governance should integrate with incident management tools like Jira and ServiceNow, ensuring alignment with regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
