Is AI going to eat the world next?
Last month, I had the privilege of hosting a session at TiE Global Summit with Andrew Ng; a well-known expert and pioneer of AI technologies. We discussed many topics and on popular demand, I wanted to share the video link of our discussions.
Some of the things we discussed include:
From a tech perspective, AI is indeed eating the world as is obvious from the following trends:
- Increasing number of research papers per month
- Growth of digital data which continues to make AI better
- Cost of training a model dropping from $2000 to $1
- An example of a GAN based video compression offering over 100x compression over H.264 without any noticeable quality degradation
- New breakthrough technologies like GPT-3 and the vast potential of what next generation of GPT-3 and BERT will bring
From a human resources perspective, AI is indeed going to bring in both new challenges and opportunities and hence there is a need for:
- Education of AI concepts and techniques almost like what has been done for the software
- Figuring out retraining of the people that will get displaced by AI tech
- Systems integration opportunities to take AI platforms and customize them to various vertical industries
- Time to rethink minimum living wage concepts that have been gaining traction for the last few years
From a fairness and bias perspective, AI needs a lot of growing up and hopefully we will find solutions to:
- Fairness and Bias, Fake News, Job Displacement
- Too much control in the hands of the big tec
Conclusion
Software did eat the world but also created a culture of winner takes all and hence we have too much concentration of wealth and too much control of the next-generation technologies like AI in the hands of the few. Let us hope when AI eats the world, it benefits us all in a big way and solves big problems not just for the privileged few.
