??AI goes nuclear??Agents rise??Future of AI

That escalated quickly. Now Google, Amazon, and Microsoft all have nuclear deals to power AI datacenters.

Google made a deal for 500 megawatts of nuclear power from Kairos Power’s small modular reactors. Microsoft plans to get 835 megawatts from restarting the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor.?

Amazon bought a nuclear-powered, 960 megawatt datacenter from Talen earlier this year and is investing over $500 million in small modular reactors. OpenAI’s Sam Altman is also invested in Oklo, a startup building commercial microreactors that are datacenter-sized.

Data center power requirements (internal and external) are so important that Meta literally tore down a data center in construction and rebuilt it so it could handle the new Nvidia’s Blackwell GB200 GPUs power and liquid cooling needs.

Agents everywhere

Will all the big AI companies invest in nuclear, autonomous agents are on the rise.

Salesforce staked its AI future on agents this fall at Dreamforce. And Microsoft just released autonomous agents within Copilot studio - to automate tasks in sales, service, finance, and supply chain.

So far, autonomous AI agents can’t 1:1 replace humans, but they’re starting to augment tasks well and make humans a lot more efficient. OpenAI just released Swarm, an open source framework to handle multi-agent orchestration (teams of agents).

e.g. At Microsoft: "Using Copilot, one sales team has achieved 9.4% higher revenue per seller and closed 20% more deals"

Future of AI

With all of the above, and researchers just winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold2 – it’s important to keep an eye on the future of AI.

Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei wrote a long essay on what could go right with powerful AI – from amazing potentials in biology and health to impacts on work and meaning.?

“Through the varied topics above, I’ve tried to lay out a vision of a world that is both plausible if everything goes right with AI, and much better than the world today. I don’t know if this world is realistic, and even if it is, it will not be achieved without a huge amount of effort and struggle by many brave and dedicated people. Everyone (including AI companies!) will need to do their part both to prevent risks and to fully realize the benefits…”

Quick analysis of essay above = worth reading + some inspiring parts + some starry-eyed techno futurism (e.g. AI will automagically save us from climate crisis).??

Oracle is designing a data center that will require more than a gigawatt of power. It will be powered by three small modular nuclear reactors. Oracle has already received building permits for the reactors, but hasn't publicly disclosed the location of the data center or future reactors. There are currently three operational small modular reactors in the world, with experts in the industry generally agreeing that the technology won't be commercialized in the US until the 2030s.
