AI and GETTING HIRED
Getting hired is becoming more complex, especially when fewer Americans are leaving their current jobs.? Job quits have dropped 11% during 2024.? In addition, the hiring rate has slowed down, with the ratio of job openings per unemployed worker is now 1.1.
?
Concurrently, the way you succeed in getting a new job is also changing due to artificial intelligence.? Here are some insights:
?
·?????? Applicant Tracking System (ATS) – You’ve probably been struggling with putting your expansive experiences into those small boxes on pre-formed applications on-line.? It’s projected that 70% of employers will use some form of ATS, so get used to it. Be very precise in matching the words from the position description onto your application.? Any variation may knock you out.? Don’t use abbreviations if possible. Information you give can easily be checked by public information found by most search engines, so be honest.
·?????? Tests – Some organizations are testing candidates on their knowledge and skills via on-line exams. ?Be very specific in your answers.? While these on-line tests may be more valid for technical jobs, it may or may not be helpful for more subjective jobs, like a counselor.? Study the position description for insights into key words or phrases.? Also know that your voice and expressions may be used to assess your personality through facial recognition.? Unfortunate, but true.? As far as I can determine, these pseudo-psychosocial profiles are a sham.
·?????? One element for artificial intelligence that is positive is the mechanical tasks of scheduling interviews, setting up travel arrangements, and answering most asked questions about the company or the job itself.? These factors can easily be programmed and administered.
·?????? Lastly, you may be interviewed by AI during the screening process:? Basic questions to check against your resume, background information you need to provide, and so on.? Just as important are the questions you ask at the end of the interview.? Don’t say, “I don’t have any questions”, unless you don’t want the job. Ask questions that the computer doesn’t know or can’t answer, then a real person needs to respond.? Questions like “What are the key results expected in the first 6 months?”, or “How will performance be measured in the first year?”
?
All of these AI hiring tools are meant to save time, while getting basic information about a potential candidate.? Unfortunately, organizations are trying to get more from artificial intelligence than the technology can supply.? Caution must be applied to counter the hype from vendors, who may oversell the product.? Sometimes easy answers are not the best answers.? Maybe in time artificial intelligence will provide a more valid process with near 100% accuracy.? But that time is not now.
