AI Generators: The future of news releases?

AI powered writing assistants are everywhere these days. They go by a lot of different names, but the premise is the same: they will, with a few pieces of information, generate written documents for you. It’s a big topic of discussion as to how these tools will change the way we do business. That includes the PR industry.
PR and media resources are offering AI services to help PR professionals write news releases and other materials. At L&F we gave one of the news release generators a try. It was pretty slick, even offering a choice for the tone and complexity of the release. But, in the end, the release didn’t read like a human wrote it. While the versions we generated for the release topic were pretty good, they lacked a cohesive flow and creativity, and didn’t reflect the brand we wanted. But the speed of the product was impressive and, if you’re having writer’s block, it could be helpful.
Will we use it again? Maybe. But if we do, it would only be with the client’s OK to do so. We’d never pass off an AI generated release as an original product.
Still, as AI writing improves, we’ll continue to monitor what happens and see how it fits into our work world. Change is constant. And this is a change that is definitely going to have an impact on the PR world.
