Tip of the spear:

DeepSeek might not be as disruptive as claimed

  • DeepSeek claimed to have developed its R1 AI model with only $6 million and 2,048 GPUs, but SemiAnalysis found that the company spent $1.6 billion on hardware and uses 50,000 Hopper GPUs.
  • High-Flyer, the parent company of DeepSeek, heavily invested in AI and launched DeepSeek as a separate venture, investing over $500 million in its technology, according to SemiAnalysis.
  • DeepSeek operates its own data centers and focuses on hiring talent exclusively from mainland China, offering high salaries to attract researchers, which has led to innovations like Multi-Head Latent Attention (MLA).

OpenAI launches o3-mini

  • OpenAI has launched o3-mini, a new reasoning model that is effective at solving complex problems and can be accessed by selecting "Reason" in ChatGPT.
  • o3-mini is 63% cheaper than OpenAI's o1-mini but remains seven times more expensive than the non-reasoning GPT-4o mini model, costing $1.10 per million input tokens.
  • o3-mini is considered a "medium risk" model due to its advanced capabilities, posing challenges with control and safety evaluations, although it is not yet proficient in real-world research tasks.

OpenAI brings its AI models to nuclear research

  • OpenAI and Microsoft are deploying their AI technology at US national laboratories by installing a model on NVIDIA's Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
  • The supercomputer will be accessible to about 15,000 researchers from Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia labs, who will use the AI for projects in fields like medicine and cybersecurity.
  • This collaboration, focused on nuclear safety and energy research, includes careful oversight by OpenAI researchers to ensure secure and effective use of AI in sensitive areas.

Tesla to launch robotaxi service in June

  • Tesla plans to launch a robotaxi service in June using a fleet of company-owned vehicles that will operate without a driver behind the wheel, according to CEO Elon Musk.
  • The company has faced criticism for delaying fully autonomous vehicle promises, but it has now shortened the timeline for delivering such technology, with recent testing involving unsupervised driving on private roads.
  • Tesla's autonomous driving technology relies solely on cameras and does not use lidar, which has led to concerns about its safety and effectiveness, especially in challenging conditions like wet roads and sunlight glare.

Apple and SpaceX bring Starlink support to iPhones

  • Apple has collaborated with SpaceX and T-Mobile to integrate Starlink satellite texting capabilities into iPhones via the new iOS 18.3 update, as reported by Bloomberg.
  • T-Mobile is conducting a limited beta test for iPhone users in the United States to try out the Starlink service, with plans to expand device compatibility in the future.
  • Currently, the Starlink service supports texting only, but SpaceX and T-Mobile plan to add data and voice features later, while Apple's satellite service operates in several countries through Globalstar.
