Last weekend, I took a flight from Dubai to Prague, and whilst onboard I tuned into a very interesting podcast interview by Toby Walsh, who is considered a “rock star†in digital revolution. His AI research and advocacy have shaped discussions around AI ethics and responsible AI deployment. But what struck and caught my attention was his comments that 10 years ago we needed our mobile plan, 20 years ago we needed our internet plan, and going forward if there is a business looking to prosper, they need their AI Plan today, as AI is transforming today faster than we realize. The development in this field has been phenomenal in the past two years, at a neck breaking speed.
?
Toby Walsh made another big claim that in about just few years most of the human driven cars will be of a thing of the past, just as horses with carts were before the first automobiles replaced them. This made me really think hard and wonder about our own industry of meetings and events, that how far are we ready to embrace this technology? Are we already? Is our region ready? Ready or not, this technology is here to stay, and hence my topic today of discussion for now, as far as I can see its only benefits for us.
Imagine attending an event where everything feels tailored just for you. You're recommended sessions that perfectly align with your interests, find networking opportunities with like-minded individuals, and receive content based on your preferences. This personalized experience fosters true connection and engagement, a stark contrast to the one-size-fits-all approach that often leaves attendees feeling unsatisfied.
?This shift towards personalized experiences isn't just a future possibility, it's a growing attendee expectation (myself included). We crave meaningful engagement, experiences that go beyond the generic and truly resonate with us. This is precisely where AI steps in as a game-changer for the events industry. Here's my take on how AI can revolutionize event experiences by creating a new level of personalization that fosters true connection and engagement
AI's Role in Personalization for the MENA Region
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, we’re seeing countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar showing a significant interest in AI technologies, making the region ripe for the implementation of personalized event experiences. These countries have already made strides in adopting AI across various sectors, from healthcare to smart cities, indicating a readiness to embrace AI in the events industry.
With AI's projected growth in the UAE, where it could account for about 14% of the GDP by 2030, and the broader Middle East region expected to benefit from 2% ($320 billion) of the total global AI benefits, the potential for using AI to enhance event personalization is substantial.
This level of personalization is crucial for events, enhancing the overall attendee experience by making attendees feel valued and engaged. Additionally, it helps events stand out in a competitive market, attracting and retaining attendees. The significant improvement in attendee satisfaction and engagement makes AI an invaluable tool for event organizers in the MENA region striving to deliver exceptional experiences

How AI Can Create Personalized Attendee Experiences at Events
By leveraging AI, event organizers can unlock a new level of attendee engagement through features like:
- Curated Content Recommendations
Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all events! AI revolutionizes attendee experiences by personalizing the content they receive throughout the event. This could include targeted exhibitor recommendations, customized event materials (presentations, handouts), or access to exclusive content based on their interests. Attendees are presented with information and resources tailored to their specific needs, fostering deeper engagement with the event and its offerings.
?Furthermore, AI can analyze attendee profiles, interests, and session selections to recommend relevant sessions, workshops, or activities. This ensures that attendees are exposed to content that aligns with their preferences, leading to a more engaging and valuable experience
Accenture's work with Expo 2020 exemplifies the power of AI in action in curating personalized content. They developed a suite of digital channels, including the official mobile app, virtual assistant, and website, all leveraging AI, natural language processing (NLP), and analytics. This ensured an accessible and relevant experience for all visitors, showcasing the potential for AI to personalize and enhance large-scale events.
2. Personalized Networking Opportunities

In the bustling environment of a large event, networking can often be challenging, with attendees unsure of whom to connect with or how to initiate conversations. AI has the power to change this dynamic by offering personalized networking opportunities tailored to each attendee's interests and objectives.
?AI can analyze attendee profiles, session selections, and networking preferences to suggest relevant connections. For instance, it can match attendees with similar interests or complementary skills, making networking more meaningful and productive.? Furthermore, AI can optimize networking lounges by suggesting individuals to join based on real-time data, such as attendee availability. This ensures that attendees are always in the right place at the right time for valuable networking opportunities.
3. Interactive Experiences
?Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) simulations, in particular, are revolutionizing how attendees interact with events. For instance, attendees could use AR to navigate the event venue or VR to participate in immersive workshops or activities tailored to their interests.
?We've already seen the power of AI in action at major sporting events. Take the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, for example. AI-powered features within the FIFA+ app enhanced the in-stadium experience for fans. By simply pointing their smartphones at the pitch, attendees could access live player statistics through Augmented Reality (AR). This technology transformed the traditional game view, offering a dynamic layer of digital information that catered to each fan's curiosity.
4. Streamlining Entry with AI-powered Check-In
?Forget the frustration of long check-in lines! Facial recognition technology with AI can significantly improve the attendee experience from the very first moment. Attendees simply upload a photo during registration, which is then converted into secure biometric data. This streamlined process not only grants access within seconds, eliminates the need for physical tickets or badge scanning but also enhances security.
By verifying attendees' identities and preventing unauthorized access, facial recognition technology adds a layer of protection to the event. This technology offers a win-win situation for both attendees and organizers, ensuring a smooth and secure event experience for all.
5. Navigation & Real-Time Updates
AI-powered event apps can serve as a constant companion throughout the event, providing real-time updates and personalized notifications regarding schedule changes, upcoming sessions, and important announcements. This eliminates the need for attendees to continuously check their email or printed materials, as the app keeps them informed and engaged.
?Furthermore, these AI-powered apps offer more than just basic notifications. They can transform a smartphone into a personal event guide, simplifying navigation of the event venue. With AI-powered features, the app can act as a personal guide, helping attendees locate specific booths or points of interest within the venue. Additionally, it can suggest nearby hotels, attractions, or restaurants within proximity. This comes in handy especially for international attendees.
?The Future of Events: Powered by AI, Focused on Attendees?
By embracing AI, meeting and event professionals can unlock a new level of attendee-centricity. Moreover, as AI technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more innovative ways to personalize the event journey, leading to a more engaged, inspired, and loyal attendee base.
?At Gulf Dunes, we believe unforgettable experiences are built on personalization. That's why we tap into cutting-edge technology and go beyond the one-size-fits-all approach at events. We're relentless in our pursuit of innovation and we’re constantly exploring new ways to integrate AI technology to customize further and enhance the MICE journey for our clients. Our goal? To ensure every participant walks away with a truly bespoke experience.
?No question to get ready for the next big wave of AI tech revolution, we are already riding the wave!
