AI, ethics, and cybersecurity in the digital age
Artificial Intelligence has brought a transformation in our world beyond imagination. Whether we realize it or not, AI is deeply embedded in our personal lives and professional spaces today. It's driving change, creating new avenues of opportunities, and making processes efficient. While AI promises much, it's my conviction that one should never fail to consider those important ethical and cybersecurity challenges arising because of this form of AI. Progress in this aspect of AI needs proportionate seriousness regarding ethical and cybersecurity responsibilities to create technologies that genuinely serve human values.
Ethics and cybersecurity
If anything, AI systems are only as unbiased, ethical, and secure as the data and algorithms they rely on. Fairness and bias are among the biggest challenges facing us. The models often inherit biases from their training data, resulting in unfair outcomes in hiring, lending, and even law enforcement. I have seen how critical it is that AI decision-making processes be transparent and built on diverse datasets to avoid perpetuating systemic biases.
Equally important are the issues of privacy, security, and data protection. AI, after all, is about the data most of which is personal and sensitive. Mishandling or misuse of this information can have devastating results, from compromised privacy to cybersecurity vulnerability. This is something, I feel, that organizations should take more seriously through strict mechanisms for the protection of data, as stipulated in regulations like the GDPR. Similarly, cybersecurity measures are important because AI systems are increasingly becoming a target for cyber-attacks aimed at manipulating models and giving either incorrect or misleading results.
Accountability and transparency are other aspects that I am concerned with. If an AI system makes any mistake, who is responsible? The inner details of how AI models make the so-called "black box" problem cannot be explained. In my personal view, developing explainable AI-XAI-models and clear accountability frameworks is a very necessary step toward building trust in AI.
What keeps me awake is the impact AI will have on jobs. As much as AI can automate and make things efficient, it also has the potential to increase socio-economic disparities. Automation of jobs may affect certain industries and communities harder than others. I believe that reskilling and upskilling programs should be a top priority for policymakers and industry leaders to help workers transition into new roles and make AI-driven progress inclusive.

What really concerns me, however, is the weaponization of AI to commit mischievous acts, such as surveillance and military. I strongly believe that what is needed is an international collaboration on the establishment of guidelines and agreements concerning ethics to prevent something bad from happening with AI that might well violate human rights and threaten global security.
Is AI truly secure and ethical?
I strongly believe that, if AI is to serve humanity, it is incumbent upon organizations and policymakers to emphasize ethical and secure AI practices. Creating guidelines like the OECD AI Principles that focus on fairness, transparency, and security is a good start. Furthermore, it is relevant that diverse perspectives, such as ethicists, cybersecurity experts, sociologists, and community representatives, come together to ensure responsible AI development.
These shall be a norm and not an afterthought-regular audits and impact assessments. In this way, one could spot potential biases, risks, and security threats before they blow out of proportion. Transparency in communications with users, governments, and other civil society organizations is another vital ingredient in the trust-building processes with AI. Further, the use of advanced security measures including encryption, anomaly detection, and secure model training techniques would go a long way in making AI systems resilient against cyber threats.
The more AI is integrated into our lives, the more I believe that it is a shared responsibility to have this technology developed and used in manners congruent with our values. It falls upon governments, businesses, and civil society to collaborate in devising policies and frameworks that will support the responsible and secure development of AI. What this calls for, importantly, is a proactive attitude underlining fairness, accountability, and inclusiveness, with due attention to the associated dimension of cybersecurity.
Ultimately, AI has to empower humanity, not at the cost of our values and security. I firmly believe that with embedding ethical principles coupled with robust security measures in their core, we can use the potential of AI in creating a future that is just, inclusive, and secure.
