This past weekend was the Kentucky Derby. It was a thrilling finish with Mystik Dan winning by literally a nose.
AI is in a race. Big Tech, Start-ups are chasing to get their share of the projected $17 Trillion dollar marketplace in 2030. Microsoft just agreed to pour $5B into Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. IBM just posted a listing of the approx.1,000 AI deployments that they did this past year. Nvidia is now valued at over $2T. Start-up are being funded at $2-$100+M, at times without even a Pitch deck.
And the lack of chips or power could impact the race.
On the other hand, the public and governments are raising their heads and trying to understand the social and environmental costs of AI as well as it benefits. To have a technology implemented that restructures society, leaves people high and dry without employment and drives energy usage to the point that climate change is accelerated are concerns that warrant discussion and/or regulation.
The newly announced. broad base AI Safety Board is a step in the right direction.
So, the AI race is on from many sides on a race course that we can't see to a finish line that we don't know where it is. Who is going to win and what does winning look like? Well, we know that it won't be boring.
