AI Enables Translation of Rare Languages

An international research team has developed an AI language model capable of understanding and translating 204 languages. Commissioned by Meta, this model particularly focuses on less commonly known languages.

?

Improved Access for Everyone There are approximately 7,000 languages worldwide, but most AI language models only support 30 to 80 of them.?

Meta's new model aims to change this by providing universal access to communication, regardless of the language spoken. Wikipedia already uses the NLLB (No Language Left Behind) model for translating and editing articles in less common languages.

How AI Learns New Languages

The training of AI models has been adjusted to include resource-poor languages. While common languages rely on millions of text examples, the research team has developed an algorithm that identifies and utilizes parallels between different languages. This approach prevents the AI from losing quality when learning new languages.

Control and Improvement

To prevent offensive and vulgar content, negative lists have been created for each language. The quality of translations is assessed by comparing them to manually translated sentences. Despite the advancements, translations of resource-poor languages still fall short of expectations. In the future, training the AI with grammar books and dictionaries could further enhance its performance.?

clickworker's Language and Text Validation Service

Access to clickworker's extensive network of real people on the ground in many countries around the world ensures that cultural nuances are captured. AI alone is becoming remarkably good at translation, but there are situations where true local understanding makes a big difference.?

McDonald's Plans to Use AI for Order Taking

Will customers soon order their burgers from a robot at fast food restaurants? McDonald's is ready to take the next step after a trial run. Other competitors are also experimenting with this technology. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being tested in the fast food industry. For the past two years, McDonald's has been testing AI for order taking at more than 100 locations. While this test run is concluding, the company remains convinced that voice-activated drive-thru ordering will be part of the future for their restaurants.

Limited Vocabulary McDonald's plans to finalize a technical solution by the end of the year. AI language models are becoming increasingly adept at conducting conversations with humans. Voice recognition is particularly suitable for the fast food industry, where the vocabulary is relatively limited. Generative AI, such as the technology behind ChatGPT, can already formulate sentences at a human level.?

In December, McDonald's announced a partnership with Google focused on the use of generative AI, though the details of the deal remain unclear. Competitors like Wendy's and Carl's Jr. are also experimenting with automated voice order-taking.

The AI Act and Its Significance for Artificial Intelligence

On May 21, 2024, the 27 EU member states passed the AI Act, the world's first comprehensive regulation for artificial intelligence (AI). The AI Act aims to establish uniform standards and guidelines for the use of AI technologies, promote trust in the technology, and support innovation in Europe.

The AI Act categorizes AI applications by risk levels and implements specific measures to ensure safety and transparency. Certain AI applications, such as social scoring by authorities and mass biometric surveillance, are prohibited. This regulation creates a stable regulatory environment that fosters innovation and ethical AI use, giving European companies a competitive advantage.?
