Her presidency became engulfed in crisis over accusations of plagiarism and criticism of her response to antisemitism on campus. The allegations included more than 40 instances of plagiarism. Her resignation marked the shortest tenure in Harvard's history, with her presidency lasting only six months and two days. Harvard Corporation accepted her resignation "in the best interests of Harvard." The incident has sparked discussions about academic integrity and dishonesty.

Let's explore the risks associated with AI systems in the education sector and explore techniques that educators could use to detect if students are leveraging AI for academic dishonesty.

The Risks:

Plagiarism: With the ability to generate human-like text at an unprecedented pace and accuracy, AI chat models can be used by students to produce large volumes of text for their assignments, reports, or even entire essays, leading to plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic offense that not only undermines the authenticity of the educational experience but also can have long-term consequences on a student's academic record and future career opportunities.

Lack of Genuine Engagement: The reliance on AI to generate answers or complete assignments for students can lead to a lack of genuine engagement with course materials, potentially hindering their learning process and limiting the development of critical thinking skills. Also, this over-reliance on AI for academic tasks may negatively impact students' motivation and self-efficacy.

Unskilled Graduates: The use of AI in education can lead to unintended consequences such as low-skilled graduates with poor employability, deficiency in learning new skills, uncertain career prospects, and the potential impact on the future of the workforce.?

Detecting Academic Dishonesty:

Educators must stay informed about students' use of AI in their academic work and implement strategies to ensure academic integrity. Some indicators that may suggest a student has used AI for academic dishonesty include:

  1. Identical or nearly identical text between the student's work and existing sources, such as online articles, blogs, or other students' work.

Sir, In my humble opinion we cannot stop the progress of AI and people will accommodate the ease of living that comes with adoption of AI in day to day living.With regards to skill we cannot compete with robots doing the routine based activities.To me there will be two avenues in the future.One is to automate the existing knowledge in civil, mechanical,electrical ,ece and other knowledge domains another will be creation of new knowledge bases with the help of software agents where creativity will be crucial.We need to have education to be diverted to education of tendencies which enables the students to engage in productive activities.Also we need our education system to cater those needs.
