AI in Education (15+ Examples)

The promise of #AI in #Education and #edtech to transform learning has long been heralded as the holy grail to uplevel the sector. 9 months in to the astonishing launch of #Chat-GPT at the world by OpenAI - where are we? Are we seeing amazing use cases of AI in education? Will a new realm of startups change the dynamic - or will we be overwhelmed by the next potentially shiny object?

Three years ago we were wowed and and somewhat perturbed by what was going on in China:

It was somewhat scary - but I don't think it's as prominent as the video makes it appear.

Reach Capital 's report on Generative AI in Edtech goes some way to sift signal from the noise. And you can see from Reach Capital's deck that a large proportion of AI propositions sit within Study Tools, Language Learning and Teacher Copilots.

AI in Education: Second Categories

The full deck is worth a look to see the 280+ tools in the space:

It's tough to keep up with what's going on, globally - but it's worth listening to (IMHO) Dr Philippa Hardman , Dan Fitzpatrick and Ethan Mollick to get a voice on AI policy , what's actually happening on the ground etc.

But unless you're actively looking, it's hard to see which companies and products are really going to change the landscape.

Below are a selection of some AI Education propositions that I think are interesting. Some are startups, some are incumbents, some are out to make a quick buck. Enjoy.

Rahim, These are excellent examples of AI in the educational process itself. But successful great educational institutions must address much more than only the interaction between students and professors in and out of the classroom or laboratory. So far the only references I’ve seen to AI in education have been around this core function. That is certainly not inappropriate. At the same time what about such critical functions as recruiting, admissions, registration, and student course and career advisory, not to mention more routine large, organizational processes, such as procurement, etc.? I’d welcome any examples that you, or your other followers, might be aware of in the EdTech field regarding applying AI to these adjacent, but also critical functions of educational institutions.

Hi Rahim, great overviews and summaries, thank you very much! And excellent that you also refer to the need for AI policies! Next to your cited UNESCO's AI policy and the general AI Act by the European Commission (without direct relation to education), the Council of Europe is also active to demand legal regulation for using AI in education based on the porinciples of human rights, democracy and rule of law. The Council of Europe is inviting to a free online event (requires registration) on 19th of October 2023, more information here: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/council-europe-takes-artificial-intelligence-critical-stracke And if you are interested in collaboration of ethical AI use in education, why not coming along to our open and informal network meetings (monthly): https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7107729456143716355 The website of the network: network https://ethicalai.ecompetence.eu Looking forward to our collabration and meeting at next opportunity! Warm regards from sunny Germany Christian
