Weekly Newsletter for Australian Educators
Welcome to issue #4, its another big week and it seems that so much happens in the AI and education landscape each week.
In this weeks edition of "AI EdRevolution" we explore some of the ways AI is transforming education, spotlighting innovative tools, ethical challenges, and the potential for AI to revolutionise learning and teaching methodologies. I have a quick look at SORA, and its possible impacts.
From Stanford University's exploration of AI's capacity to enhance teaching effectiveness and student engagement, to the practical applications of tools like EduAide.Ai and ScholarAI in streamlining educational material preparation and academic research.
This edition looks into ethics, acknowledging the challenges educators face in maintaining academic standards amidst the rise of AI tools. Articles from Harvard Graduate School of Education and insights shared by me on Science Lab AI emphasise the importance of originality, human performance, and ethical considerations.
Engelsberg Ideas and ABC News articles further explore the ethical dimensions of AI in education, advocating for responsible innovation and the integration of ethical principles into AI development. The significance of these discussions is exemplified by initiatives like Indiana’s AI-Powered Platform Pilot Grant, which aims to enhance AI accessibility for over 45,000 students, demonstrating the practical impact of AI on educational accessibility and quality.
I also have another look at Google's Gemini's advancements in speed, creativity, and translation capabilities, contrasted with ChatGPT's strengths in coding and image processing. Make sure you check out the AI tools, that are briefly reviewed and the "Practical AI" example at the end of the newsletter.
AI in The Classroom

Emerging Trends and Predictions
Researchers studied how well ChatGPT meets user needs in education. They collected data from Indonesian universities and analysed it to understand how to address issues like plagiarism and ethical AI use. The study found that the clarity, timeliness, and format of information from ChatGPT mattered most for satisfaction, rather than accuracy. Suggesting for some using ChatGPT could be of concern if outcomes are not checked. Read More. https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202402.0040/v1

Gemini Ultra: I've previously mentioned the Gemini tool, but it's worth noting that it has received updates, reportedly introducing document integration for enhanced multimodality. Although I haven't successfully been able to use this feature yet, my usage of Gemini has increased. Known for its speed, creativity, and outstanding translation capabilities, Gemini continues to stand out as an advanced AI model.. Distinguishing it in tasks requiring quick and innovative outputs. While Gemini excels in these areas, ChatGPT is better for coding and image generation, each tool has its unique strengths and optimal applications in educational and technical fields. 9 个月Quite a job to keep churning out a digest such as this so regularly. Without diving into any links yet, I noted the recurring theme for educators of potential customisations for learners. Our "individual learning plans", by and large, are a wonderful aspiration but currently impractical to realise. Where I am in English for Speakers of Other Languages, the challenge is often to teach and encourage self-directed learning, which I imagine will be the route by which students most effectively find their best learning contexts. But if you belong to the school of thought that we construct meaning and learning together - socially - the teacher will still have a role. Necessarily, we'll work more to the median. A number of my students last year had difficulty being 'real' with their answers from reading comprehension exercises. They'd lift answers directly out of the text, so that words like "I" or "we" would appear in their answers instead of names or third-person pronouns, like "he", "she" or "they". I asked ChatGPT for a reading text and exercises where the answers would require the use of third person pronouns. It was quite successful as far as it went. I had to weed out a couple of questions.
