AI Drug Discovery, 150-Year Lifespans & CellBot's New Look!
AlphaProteo: Pioneering AI-Powered Breakthroughs in Drug Discovery
| Written by Mrinal Subhash - Bioinformatics Specialist @CellStrat
Imagine a world where we could design drugs faster than ever before, create custom cancer therapies, and neutralize viruses with pinpoint precision — all thanks to artificial intelligence. Welcome to the world of?AlphaProteo, Google DeepMind’s latest breakthrough, poised to revolutionize how we think about biology, medicine, and the future of therapeutic discovery.
In the wake of AlphaFold — the AI marvel that cracked the protein-folding puzzle — Google’s AI wizards have taken their next step, one that could fundamentally change the landscape of healthcare. AlphaProteo doesn’t just predict the structure of proteins; it builds entirely new ones. With these custom-built proteins, it can block disease-causing targets, open new pathways for drug discovery, and fast-track solutions that could save lives.
Let’s dive into what makes AlphaProteo a potential game-changer — and why it could rewrite the rules of biotechnology as we know it.
What if you could live over 150 years?
| Written by Prof. M. Ramasubramaniam, LIBA, Chennai
Do you know that there is only one person officially documented to have lived longer than 120 years – Ms. Jeanne Calment fromFrance. This leads us to ask what if, a majority of human population live over 100 years? What will people do in their extended lifespan? Apart from the consequential necessities like food, shelter and money, what will you do for a living in your extended lifespan? Answers for such questions lie in the immediate times ahead of us.
For the record, human longevity has historically increased which is reflected in lower mortality rates and increase of average lifespan that prevail in many countries. But this trend has slowed down due to several factors that can be reserved for a detailed discussion elsewhere. Surprisingly, this trend may be up for a reversal soon.
If the recent research is any indication, the world as predicted by Rayz Kurzwell in his book “Singularity is Near” is not far away. At the most, it could be just a decade away.Bio-tech researchers argue that slowing down the ageing process is the only solution to longevity. This implies the ability to repair individual cells and tissues in the human body. In a recent significant advancement, scientists have successfully re-wired the genetic composition of yeast cells to almost double their lifespan[1].
Further, across the globe, there has been a rapid increase in the number of bio-tech companies which are expending their efforts to develop anti-ageing drugs[2].Besides genetic re-wiring, Nanobots is another frontier among the new technologies. Specifically, smart nanobots[3],in conjunction with AI, can perform complex tasks such as removing the plaque-forming cells in arteries. Swarms of nanobots, through use of AI technologies such as tiny LLMs can reason, control and act autonomously in performing challenging surgeries.
These are early signs of the second phase of human advancement of merging bio-technology and AI, first being overcoming the health challenges through application of pharmaceutical and nutritional knowledge. AI will not only enable the hardware such as nanobots, but will also exponentially accelerate the bio-tech research to make the 100+ years longevity a reality.?No doubt, we are living in exciting times and the humanity, in the not-too-distant future, may embrace the emotions of what it is meant to be like a Markandeya or Ashwatthama.
