AI Disruption & The Urgency for Black Women's Inclusion: A Call to Action

The last ten weeks have been an intense period of reflection and action. Losing two close family members within just eight weeks has made me acutely aware of life's fragility. But even in grief, my resolve remains unshaken—we cannot afford to be left out of the AI revolution.
The AI landscape is shifting rapidly, yet Black women are still missing from critical conversations. Despite the work of many, including my #SheDISRUPTS initiative and the #BeMeDigitalinclusion program, systemic exclusion persists. The urgency to act has never been greater.
The UK AI Summit at Bletchley & Its Impact
The UK's AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park gathered world leaders to discuss AI governance, but how many Black women-led SMEs were at the table? With AI poised to reshape economies, the absence of diverse voices means policies will benefit a select few again while leaving Black entrepreneurs behind. We must ensure AI policies reflect the needs of all business owners—not just Big Tech.
Fighting for Representation in AI Copyright Policy
For the last ten weeks, I've contributed to the UK AI Copyright Framework Consultation, advocating for Black creatives, AI developers, and SMEs. I raised these concerns earlier this year at the Fawcett Society's Feminism in AI event, where I warned of AI becoming another tool for economic warfare. The harsh reality? The rights holders shaping AI policy are not Black.
The consultation process itself was revealing—once again, it felt as though a small, elite group was setting the rules, leaving historically marginalised communities fighting for scraps. The question is: Who owns AI? And who profits from it? Without intervention, the answer will remain the same.
Paris AI Action Summit & The Call for Secure AI
The Paris AI Action Summit has called for secure, ethical AI. While this is crucial, what does this mean for Black women? If AI security discussions continue to exclude our voices, then "security" may mean securing AI against us rather than for us. This is why Black women must be included as users, designers, researchers, and policymakers shaping AI's future.
The Global #BeMeDigitalinclusion Initiative & A Way Forward
Through the #BeMeDigitalinclusion and #SheDISRUPTS initiatives, I am committed to ensuring that Black women are not merely passive adopters of AI but active contributors and decision-makers. When we lead, we bring ethical, secure, and community-centred AI solutions that serve everyone—not just a privileged few.
The Time to Act is Now
We are at a crossroads. The UK AI Summit, AI copyright debates, and global AI security initiatives are shaping the future. But without Black women at the table, history will repeat itself.
?? So, what can we do?
