A.I. in Differentiated Classrooms.

A.I. in Differentiated Classrooms.

Are you building a tool to help? Talk to me!

As a classroom teacher I was always very conscious that I needed to meet every child where they were and help them move forward. For many years I studied, practiced and even taught other educators how to differentiate curriculum to this end.

The one element of a differentiated classroom I always struggled with was providing the many and varied learners in my class with the real time feedback they needed. It’s hard being where and what everyone needs at the same time. Ask any teacher!

Perhaps this is an area where A.I. could have a huge impact!

The immediacy of feedback is important for a number of reasons:

1. Reinforcement of Learning

Immediate feedback follows the principles of operant conditioning, where learners associate their actions (responses) with consequences. Positive feedback for correct responses reinforces the learning while constructive feedback for errors helps correct misconceptions.

2. Active Engagement

Immediate feedback keeps learners actively engaged. It encourages them to think critically about their responses and compare them to the correct answers, promoting deeper understanding and retention.

3. Reduced Cognitive Load

Immediate feedback reduces the cognitive load by providing clarity, guidance, and closure. According to Cognitive Load Theory, this allows learners to focus on new information rather than lingering uncertainties.

4. Timely Error Correction

Immediate feedback helps learners recognize and correct errors before they become ingrained. This prevents the reinforcement of incorrect information and ensures that learners build a solid foundation of knowledge.

5. Motivation and Self-Efficacy

Drawing on Self-Determination Theory, we know immediate feedback enhances learners' motivation by providing a sense of competence. When students see their progress in real-time, it boosts their confidence and self-efficacy, motivating them to continue learning.

6. Scaffolding and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)

Immediate feedback can be tailored to a learner's ZPD, offering just the right amount of assistance. It helps learners move from what they can do with support to what they can do independently.

7. Formative Assessment

Immediate feedback serves as a formative assessment tool, offering insights into a learner's progress. Educators can use this information to adapt instruction and address individual learning needs effectively.

8. Metacognition

Immediate feedback encourages metacognition, as learners reflect on their thought processes and decision-making. This metacognitive awareness fosters self-regulated learning, as students become better at monitoring and adjusting their strategies.

Given the obvious importance of immediate feedback for the learner and the challenge it presents for the teacher in a differentiated classroom, I am keen to speak with designers and developers who are working to solve this. If you have an A.I. based tool that is working to provide immediate feedback in this way please reach out. I’d love to take a look! I am sure many other teachers would too.

Or are you a teacher with a great solution that you are already using? Please share.

For me, I think this could be a great way for A.I. to support pedagogical best practice in the classroom and make the work load of teachers more manageable. It’s a win - win if we can get it right!

Now, how do we get it right? ??

I would second Mark’s comment. I have seen it in action and it’s impressive in its detail to teacher needs and student improvement.

Absolutely Sara... I've been experimenting with my History and English classes with great success; however, there is the temptation for students to become more reliant on the content creation using AI. I would love to see an AI program that provides instant feedback using handwritten pieces of work... maybe it exists?

Sara R., thanks for this really thoughtful piece- such important questions!

Surely using AI, we can do it. First we need the classes to be monitored using a software. I am experimenting the same in a school . We are working on the lessons - teaching and learning in multiple subjects of the curriculum.
