Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries, but many executives feel overwhelmed by the technical jargon. That’s why I’m launching a new series to simplify AI and Machine Learning (ML) for decision-makers.
Let’s start with where it all began: the history of AI. From Alan Turing's groundbreaking ideas in the 1950s to the rise of deep learning and ChatGPT today, AI has come a long way.
Lets review a quick timeline:
?? 1950s: Birth of AI – Alan Turing proposes the Turing Test, and John McCarthy coins "Artificial Intelligence."
?? 1970s: Expert Systems – MYCIN, developed in the early 1970s at Stanford University under the leadership of Dr. Edward Shortliffe, was one of the first AI expert systems designed to assist physicians in diagnosing bacterial infections and recommending treatments. However, it never made it to production due to several practical challenges.
?? 1990s: Machine Learning & Data Mining – The 1990s marked a transformative period for Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly with the rise of machine learning (ML) and data mining. These disciplines shifted the focus from rule-based systems to data-driven approaches, enabling algorithms to analyze vast datasets, uncover hidden patterns, and make predictions.
