AI day one or one day, are you ready ?
AI generated in Adobe Firefly with a John van Uden prompt.

AI day one or one day, are you ready ?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept. It's here, rapidly transforming and providing new capabilities that could impact many ways of working today. The number one question in town halls, management meetings, or skip meetings I face is, “Will AI impact my job ? When will AI make my skills redundant?”. Now i can understand how these questions are praying on peoples minds. The media hype from the providers of AI technologies is off the scale. Creating the potential opportunity for these technologies by the providers is driven by enormous investment; they have to generate the hype and sometimes the fear. In several interviews, the investment justification from the providers is seen as the risk of not investing is far worse. It is ok to be sceptical of the impact of these technologies at this point. Over the summer break, several articles and company valuations were readjusted to demonstrate that the value has yet to turn up and could be a long way down the road.?

However, as an individual, can you treat the question about your role and skills in two ways? One day, this technology will impact my role, and at that point, I will use it and adapt. Today is day one, and you will invest in your future to learn new skills and find value in the solutions today.?

So, will you be a passive observer or an active participant in this evolution? The rapid pace of change can easily overwhelm one, but let's shift our perspective.

Proactive vs. Reactive

History has shown that those who embrace transformational change and adapt their skill sets will thrive. So let's start:

  • Upskilling and Reskilling: Invest in continuous learning. Acquire digital literacy, data analysis, and problem-solving skills. Understanding AI's capabilities can help enhance your work today. All the big players in this space provide free training and tooling for you to learn and experiment. You must start learning, experimenting, being curious and maintaining your learning journey. Use ChatGPT, Gemini, or Office co-pilot in safe places to understand how the tools can support you. Pick a path and explore your learning journey in this space.
  • Developing Human-Centric Skills: AI excels at processing data, but it struggles with empathy, creativity, and critical thinking. These uniquely human qualities will become even more valuable. In the early years, AI will be a guiding hand to human activity. Blend the power of data insights and AI models at predicting and summarizing alongside the human element of creativity, empathy, and decision-making.?
  • Building Resilience: Change is inevitable. Cultivate adaptability, flexibility, and a growth mindset. These qualities will help you navigate career transitions smoothly. Embrace the support AI tooling can provide and use the time provided to progress your creativity or pursue new opportunities.
  • Embracing Collaboration: AI is a tool, not a replacement. Learn to work effectively with AI systems, viewing them as collaborators rather than competitors. AI is not a threat to those who move forward with it rather than against it.?

The Future is in Your Hands

The future of work is being written today. By proactively preparing for the AI revolution, you're not just securing your job but shaping your career. Let's transform fear into excitement, uncertainty into opportunity. Are you ready to embrace the future? Make it your day one don’t stay thinking one day.

I totally agree. AI is an opportunity and not a threat. In Software Engineering in Carlsberg we're constant learners looking for the next thing to be able to increase our throughput and certainly in software development AI is hugely important: https://birkholm-buch.dk/2024/04/30/github-copilot-drives-better-developer-experience-2/

The only thing I would advise about AI, which is a here and now risk of taking your eyes of the ball. Least not to forget the old systems we need to decommission, the back log and the items developers may now skip and operations may miss for the new and shiny. It is a balance we need to focus on as we embrace AI. A lower number of tools used for example improves deverloper load and lowers security risk. That is business value I can see and plan out to improve operational risk. With AI, its pay back is at a later date, may add IP to the business and make it more attractive overal. The balance is key as we head off on the new gold rush!

Great points - especially around developing human-centric skills. Maybe we should double down on developing those skills such as creativity, critical thinking and empathy going forward. Feels like our society may benefit from shifting the historical focus on facts and knowledge to creativity and critical thinking and the tools can handle the facts and knowledge going forward.
