As the world of cyber security continues to evolve, there is no greater challenge facing organisations today than the increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks, many of which are powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Once a tool only available to high-level adversaries, AI has quickly become accessible to a wide range of attackers, leading to an explosion of new types of threats. In fact, AI's involvement in cybercrime is now so widespread that many companies are finding themselves outpaced by both the rapid innovation of threats and the expanding complexity of their environments.
After speaking with leaders in our community, one thing is clear—AI is reshaping cyber security at breakneck speed. This week, we explore the challenges, key insights from major reports, and the opportunities for those who can stay ahead.
How big is the challenge?
AI is supercharging cyber threats, making attacks faster, smarter, and harder to detect. Security teams are in a high-speed arms race, trying to counter increasingly sophisticated tactics. The World Economic Forum reported a 223% rise in deepfake-related tool sales on dark web forums in just one year. Meanwhile, 87% of security professionals say their organisation has already faced AI-driven cyber-attacks. The scale and complexity of the challenge continue to grow, leaving many struggling to keep up.
Could this be a double edge sword?
AI isn’t just a threat—it’s also a powerful tool for defenders. Automated threat detection, real-time analysis, and AI-driven security platforms offer a fighting chance. However, the very technology that strengthens defences is also being used by attackers to create hyper-personalised phishing scams, deepfake fraud, and large-scale automated attacks. The balance of power is shifting constantly, and staying ahead requires continuous adaptation.
Key takeaways from the Unit 42 Report.
Palo Alto Networks ’ Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 report identifies some of the most pressing security gaps, particularly around basic but critical security controls:

For security leaders who can harness AI effectively, the opportunity is immense. AI can automate threat detection, correlate security alerts, and improve response times, allowing teams to focus on strategic defences. Organisations that invest in AI-driven security, workforce training, and proactive risk management will be far better positioned against evolving threats.
Five practical steps, shared by leader in our community:
The AI-cyber battle is like a fast-moving river, constantly changing its course. To navigate it successfully, security leaders must embrace collaboration, the ethical use of AI, and the collective strength of knowledge sharing. Just as a team of skilled rowers can steer a boat through turbulent waters, those who strengthen their defences, build a security-aware culture, and harness AI’s potential will stay ahead of the current. The threats may be unpredictable, but with the right tools and a united effort, AI can become the vessel that helps us safely navigate the storm.
Why collaboration is key
As cyber threats evolve, collaboration and diversity are essential for staying ahead. Communities & initiatives such as SECURE | CYBER CONNECT Community & Podcast , YorkshireX , DTX 360 , Clarion Events , Cyber News Group , Cyber UK, CyBlack , Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) , Join Momentum , the ISACA Northern England Chapter , Cyber London , and the Yorkshire Cyber Security Cluster offer vital platforms for professionals to share insights and drive innovation. These collaborations are increasingly crucial as AI becomes an indispensable tool in fortifying cyber security defences against ever-evolving threats.
