Just lately, the weather seems to be hinting to us that summer may well be over, and if you're waking up to yet another dismal, damp day, fear not, we're hear to brighten the mood with all the latest news and views from the world of manufacturing. ???
We have yet another packed digital briefing today, including an interview from our studio at Smart Manufacturing & Engineering Week back in June. AI is undoubtedly a hot topic right now, with manufacturers of all stripes starting to take a closer look at the technology and what it can do for them. We spoke to Katie Paxton-Fear , Lecturer in Cyber Security, The Manchester Metropolitan University , about some of the new cyber security techniques that are being enabled by AI, the new capabilities that exist and how adversaries are starting to use AI to hack manufacturing organisations.?
In addition, we have also kicked-off a new series of expert blog articles. Leaders from around the sector will be regularly sharing their experience and insight on key issues impacting the sector, from the need for an industrial strategy, the importance of international trade, the skills gap and the deployment of robotics. We thought there would be no better place to start than with Hone-All Precision Ltd. 's Andrea Wilson and the Minister for Manufacturing campaign. Running for four years the initiative calls for manufacturing to have better representation and a greater voice within government. ??????

Andrea Wilson: the minister for manufacturing campaign
In the first in a new series of expert guest blogs, Andrea Wilson, Director at Hone-All Precision, discusses the Minister for Manufacturing campaign. Andrea commented: "For decades, we have been talking about skills shortages, the lack of cohesion within the industry and how help is not being received by those who need it the most. We do not have a representative within government who can be our voice, who will challenge what doesn’t work, and who will campaign for a long-term, robust, cross-party industrial strategy."
"September will provide true barometer for EV demand," says SMMT chief
The Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has said that all eyes are now on September - from which time new cars will be registered with a 74-plate - as this will provide a true barometer for EV demand. Figures have shown a welcome growth in demand for the latest battery electric vehicles (BEVs) with the market up 10.8%. This has come at a cost, however, with a summer of heavy discounting by manufacturers and a raft of new models introduced to stimulate demand.
