I'm glad I made the time to attend the AICD annual event at the Melbourne Town Hall this week. An impressive turnout of 1,000 members joined in person and another 1,000 online. Christine Holman delivered an eloquent and sensible message on the topics of AI, Cyber and Climate Governance.
My key takeaways:
?? Generative AI
- The three major categories of AI Risk (bias, hallucination?and jailbreak)
- ESG: The ecological impact of AI (e.g. energy and water consumption)
- AGL's wise approach to engage a vendor agnostic AI expert to provide advice on ethical and strategic?AI solutions
- Board directors should resist the temptation to integrate AI into their ERP's prior to truly understand its applications and tangible business benefits
?? Cyber
- Black box exercises
- The need for due diligence when selecting cyber leaders
- Cyber response?plan as part of the board scenario planning exercises
?? Climate Governance
- AICD course on climate governance
- Mandatory climate disclosure
- Compliance versus voluntary adoption
Bruce Cowley also did a great job speaking on the themes of culture, CEO's succession planning, NFP governance and the need for building financial resilience.
Finally George Savvides, former MD at Medibank and chairman at SBS Australia, joined the speakers on a panel discussion moderated by Sonia Petering.
Highlights?from the panel discussion:
? The need for psychological safety, humility and ego management when leading high performing teams
? The importance of allocating appropriate budget to leadership development. Behavioural capability won't happen automatically!
? Aspects of the board's role: support management team success and enable vision realisation
The ice on the cake was to bump into my dear friend Sami Makelainen! ??
Congrats Evan Dukas and the AICD team for another successful and insightful event.
