India's most valuable PSU remains a wealth destroyer

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) overtook State Bank of India on Wednesday to become India's most valuable state-run company in terms of market capitalisation.

At the start of trading on Wednesday, LIC had a market capitalisation of ?5.66 lakh crore, compared to SBI's ?5.64 lakh crore, though SBI recovered from opening lows to reclaim the top spot for a brief period again.

China population extends historic decline as Covid-19 deaths surged

China’s population extended a historic decline in 2023 as deaths rose after Beijing ended strict pandemic curbs and births continued to fall.

China recorded 11.1 million deaths, higher than the previous year’s 10.41 million, according to data released by the National Statistics Bureau on Wednesday. The increase is likely due to a swell in Covid-related fatalities in the months after authorities abandoned their Covid Zero strategy in December 2022 and led to an explosion of infections.

Apple passed Samsung as the world's top phone maker in 2023

Apple Inc.’s iPhone dethroned Samsung Electronics Co. devices to become the best-selling smartphone series over the course of 2023, the first time South Korea’s largest company has lost the top spot since 2010.

The iPhone accounted for a fifth of the global market with close to 235 million shipments last year, research firm IDC estimates. Samsung, whose shipments slumped in double-digits to 226.6 million, came in second, ahead of Chinese device makers like Xiaomi Corp.

Startup India, the flagship initiative launched by the Government of India on January 16, 2016, has marked a significant shift in the startup landscape. The initiative, aimed at fostering innovation and cultivating a robust ecosystem for entrepreneurship, has not only propelled India to become the third-largest startup ecosystem globally but has also seen a remarkable rise in the involvement of women in leadership roles.

As per a report released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry on Monday, January 15, a staggering 55,816 startups, representing 48% of the total 1,17,254 startups in India (as of December 2023), now boast at least one woman director.
