Spain takes the lead with AI regulation agency to dominate the industry

Spain has taken a groundbreaking step by instituting a national AI regulation agency through a Royal Decree, marking itself as the inaugural EU nation to do so. The newly formed Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA) is committed to ensuring that AI evolution in Spain remains "inclusive, sustainable, and centered on its citizens."?

The move also falls in line with Spain's National Strategy on Artificial intelligence (ENIA), and their Digital Agenda 2026.

This initiative firmly places Spain at the forefront of the AI sector within the EU.

Indonesia has declared its intent to formulate ethical standards for AI utilization, while Japan has recently unveiled a brochure discussing the application of generative AI services.

Both guidelines highlight challenges and offer a roadmap for safer AI practices, reflecting the escalating AI adoption in Asia. This confirms that regulators in Asia are becoming more engaging in addressing these evolving challenges.

The primary objectives of this directive are to ethically integrate GenAI across state governance, fortify defenses against potential adversities, and position the state as a GenAI innovator.

This September, the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) launched a tracker pinpointing legislative policies and associated developments in select jurisdictions.

While it is not globally comprehensive and does not include all AI initiatives within each jurisdiction due to rapid policy changes, it still provides valuable commentary on the broader AI landscape.
