AI, Collective Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence: How might we combine them better?

AI is all the rage. Quite literally: it’s said it could destroy jobs, upend democracies, and take over human affairs.?But is our outlook entirely bleak? Could algorithms also be harnessed to make governments and societies smarter? What card does democracy have to play when it comes to using AI ethically and effectively? How can human collective intelligence provide the necessary moral guidance to AI??
Reinvent?local government through collective intelligence and artificial intelligence.
To incorporate citizens’ collective intelligence in local policy making, the municipality of Slagelse in Denmark invented a knowledge bridge relying on AI. They designed an online deliberation platform integrating artificial intelligence/natural language processing (NLP) mechanisms to sort and categorize citizen insights, making engagement of a larger number of citizens possible. Carina A. Hallin, co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Collective Intelligence for Democracy and Governance and Naima Lipka share the preliminary results of that experiment.?
Can AI assisted deliberation perform better than human moderators?
AI deliberation or self moderated platforms are described as such as they can function without a human moderator. Alice Siu, co-author of The Routledge Handbook of Collective intelligence for Governance and Democracy?describes a platform configured to mirror the moderation practices of the Deliberative Polling framework designed by Prof. James Fishkin. Preliminary evidence shows that this platform led to increased gender equity in participation compared to in-person deliberation, and also performed well on equitable participation across two other demographic factors commonly associated with privilege: income and education.
I believe in the common fabric of humanity and the value of the individual within society. Understanding, cooperation and humility are critical if we are to prosper within the ecological limitations of our finite planet.
