AI can you make Art ?

This is going to be a long list of links, some images and more questions than answers.

Apologies in advance: Some of the images are disturbing, the very concept of machine generated art may be something the reader find abhorrent.

So, I'll shut up (for once) and just share what I found over the last week and you the reader can decide whether this is art or not.

Where can I find AI art ?

?The Dilemma:

AI art’s hidden echo chamber is about to implode. Here’s what that will look like - BBC Science Focus Magazine

"“AI will eventually start training on its own work – it’s expected to happen. That will essentially lead to stagnation in creativity. They train on what is already on the internet, so it will copy what is popular out there,” says Ahmed Elgammal, a professor of computer science at Rutgers University.

“If you get into the cycle of feeding it what is on the internet, which right now is mostly AI, that will lead to a stagnation where it is looking at the same thing, the same art style, over and over again.”

While it is easy to picture a future where AI starts pushing out morphed art, driven by repeated training on its own images, it is far more likely that this will simply promote further what it is already creating."

What's next?

I spent a short week diving into the new world of digital art. I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter whether I think AI generated art is art or not, these people are going to create, publish, share and sell this stuff regardless of my opinion, stamp of approval or not. That realisation can be applied to a lot of concepts in AI at the moment. Food for thought.

(note: I've done my best to link to these amazing artist's pages, if I'm not crediting someone correctly let me know and I'll correct it straight away).

Good caveat. After browsing most AI art galleries I can get some kind of "trypophobia" from the sometimes excruciating (almost fractal) detail of some of these generated pieces. I think this is part of the hype cycle; WOW we can make things super detailed or hypo-realistic! But that doesn't give you the feeling of looking at a Monet. Artists: Refik Anadol is an artist who is currently exhibiting in Kunsthal Rotterdam, so someone who is more in museum space than internet (also has a TED talk). I personally enjoy seeing where Amritha R Warrier is going with her (AI) art. Artworks: This is an all-time favorite. Minted almost three years ago using GPT-3. AIs trying to set a meeting ad infinitum, making up excuses. https://teia.art/objkt/39107 And another favorite from just before the Gen AI art Boom. Hard to re-find because the keyword "generative" is being subsumed. Octopuses made/generated with code (p5) https://mirror.xyz/0xF7E15015D31e1Be374c21E6F1dE91147C8B5db88/tEL7_taJEbIiA4rcfZnOvHDRqnKzV2haRnnVV2YFU94
