AI can harm you if not used thoughtfully: Mindful Typing

The Importance of Typing Mindfully When Engaging with AI: A Personal Perspective

As the founder of CareTec.ai, I’ve spent countless hours interacting with AI, particularly large language models like Llama, ChatGPT, and Gemini. These tools are incredibly intelligent, capable of understanding and correcting mistakes, often picking up on the meaning behind typos and even offering more refined suggestions. This can make it tempting to type quickly, without much attention to detail, trusting that the AI will ‘clean up’ after us.

But over time, I noticed something: my typos were increasing. At first, I shrugged it off—after all, the AI still understood me. But it soon became clear that this habit of carelessness was affecting not just my typing, but my overall attention to detail. I began to wonder: could relying too heavily on AI corrections be dulling my own cognitive sharpness?

The answer, I believe, is yes.

When we consistently rely on AI to fix our mistakes, we disengage from the process of thinking through our words carefully, which can have subtle but significant impacts on our mental acuity. Studies suggest that attention to detail is critical not only for professional performance but also for cognitive health. Just as multitasking can diminish focus, allowing AI to do all the work for us can erode our ability to stay sharp and engaged.

This realization led me to change my approach. Now, when I type to AI, I make a conscious effort to produce clean, error-free text, not for the AI’s sake but for my own. This practice has helped me stay more mindful, improving my focus and well-being. By being intentional with my words, I reinforce mental discipline and attention to detail, which ultimately benefits my work and my life..

At CareTec.ai, we emphasize this balance in the way we train our clients to use AI. It’s not just about efficiency; it’s about using AI as a tool for empowerment, fostering habits that enhance our well-being rather than diminish it. We believe that AI should support us, but not at the expense of our mental engagement. Through mindful use, we can harness the power of AI while maintaining—and even sharpening—our cognitive abilities.

So the next time you interact with an AI, consider typing with care. Not for the AI’s benefit, but for your own.

LLM's "understanding" of typos relies on statistical language models trained on massive text datasets. This can lead to the generation of responses that unintentionally reinforce biases present in the training data, potentially impacting user perception and self-esteem. How might adversarial training techniques be used to mitigate the risk of bias amplification in LLM typo interpretation?
