Deep Dive ??

1???Human-like robots could be the next breakthrough

Robotics could be close to a significant breakthrough, like the ChatGPT moment in AI, due to advancements in deep learning, reinforcement learning, and generative AI. These technologies enable robots to learn and adapt to their environments, rather than being pre-programmed for specific tasks. Despite current limitations, the development of a general-purpose home robot is now considered achievable, marking a potential milestone in human-level machine intelligence.

2???Artificial Intelligence Index Report 2024, current AI advancements summarised on 502 pages

What is it?

It’s a comprehensive (500 pages) overview of the current state and advancements in artificial intelligence, highlighting its growing impact on society, economy, and governance. It is recognised globally as one of the most credible and authoritative sources for data and insights in this field. It’s the report to read.

I have not covered it in full yet, but a few take-aways.

???“AI has surpassed human performance on several benchmarks, including some in image classification, visual reasoning, and English understanding.”

Let that sink in for a while! We are used to machines surpassing us in storing and accessing knowledge and calculus, now it’s becoming better than us in areas that we identify as deeply human - such as language understanding. How much of the work at your company has language understanding as it’s basis? Now AI is better than most of your workforce on those tasks.

Some actionable tips from reading the report:

??Leverage AI for Competitive Advantage - AI can significantly enhance operational efficiencies, improve customer experiences, and inform strategic decisions through data insights.

??Invest in AI Literacy and Training - this ensures that employees are equipped to leverage AI tools responsibly and effectively.

??Monitor AI Impact and Prepare for Policy Change - AI’s landscape is rapidly evolving with shifts in public opinion and policy. Monitor regulations to ensure compliance, the EU AI Act is coming into play soon and have consequences for companies operating in the market.

3???Lessons learned after using Microsoft Copilot for a year.

After using Microsoft Copilot for a year, Microsoft reported that Copilot was used to streamline work, from managing emails to preparing for meetings, integrating and analyzing information from various communication and documentation platforms. Leading to significantly enhanced productivity. To get going efficiently they pointed out the importance of clear goals, structured training, and the need for champions at all levels.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/our-year-with-copilot-what-microsoft-has-learned-about-ai-at-work/

Further Microsoft took a closer look at early-in-career employees and after using Copilot for 11 weeks. The majority say that access to Copilot would affect their choice of employer.

???To think about: Access to the latest AI-tools might become a factor that people consider when applying for new jobs.

As always when reading AI articles from Microsoft you must remember that they are heavily biased towards a positive view since they want us to use the tool.

4???Competition for computer chips is intensifying.

Why is there such a push for creating AI-chips? Sam Altman suggested that "compute" (a term for computer usage) will be a the most valuable resource in the future. What did he mean by this?

?? In the process of training large language models (LLMs), a larger model tends to perform better and training a larger model require more compute. If the scaling "laws" hold true, the market leader of the (predicted) gigantic AI market will the company capable of training the largest models, i.e. having access to the most compute.

???Currently, Nvidia's GPUs (processors for training AI) set the gold standard, and everyone worldwide seeks to access these chips. This demand inevitably leads to resource limitations and enables Nvidia to increase prices.

???By developing your own AI-chips, you can manage availability and potentially reduce costs.

???Silicon Valley startup Rivos raised?over $250M ?in fresh capital to produce a server chip for AI workloads.

5???Rapid progress in generative AI Music, might transform this business

Lately Generative AI Music has improved massively, and Suno AI V3 has received a fair amount of attention during the last week. It enables you to generate two-minute, radio-quality music from text prompts in just a few seconds. https://suno.com/

???Outlook: The music industry once shifted from physical to digital distribution. Another disruptive change is imminent - AI-generated music. Streaming companies like Spotify and Apple Music, who pay artists per play, could profit from incorporating low-cost AI-produced music.

While the music industry is at the forefront, similar scenarios could unfold for authors, filmmakers, project managers, and so on…

?? Does it sound scary or inspiring?

6???AI is approaching human levels on persuasiveness

Anthropic's latest and greatest, Claude 3 Opus has been used to explore the persuasive capabilities AI, comparing it to human persuasion in a controlled experiment. The result: The AI is performing on par with human-generated arguments.

Imagine the consequences of having a tool that can be used for persuasion on a large scale. How would you use it in the leader role? Is it ethically acceptable to use such tools to push your employees in certain directions? From my understanding of the EU AI Act, such use-cases might be forbidden - however there will likely be a greyzone.

https://www.anthropic.com/news/measuring-model-persuasiveness

???Media of the week: The Ezra Klein Show

Anthropic is one of the leaders in developing generative AI models, its current model is on pair with the best version of ChatGPT from OpenAI. Dario Amodei is a former OpenAI employee and is now the CEO for Anthropic, in the podcast he discusses the exponential growth of AI capabilities, implication for various sectors and ethical considerations and need for responsible development and deployment of AI.

My take-away-is to be prepared. If taking a sceptic role and assigning an extremely low probability that we are on an exponential growth curve for AI, it’s still important to risk a small investment into understanding what the technology can do for you since - the consequences of missing it completely could be detrimental.
