AI: A Bridge Across Languages and Castes

The potential of AI cuts both ways. While concerns exist that AI could widen the existing inequalities, it also offers a groundbreaking opportunity to bridge communication gaps in a world brimming with linguistic diversity. This essay explores how AI can empower individuals in a country like India. Here, a multitude of languages creates significant barriers to information access and academic progress. India as a nation is celebrated for its vibrant cultural tapestry and is also home to 22 official languages and countless dialects. This linguistic mosaic, while a source of national pride presents a hurdle for many young professionals.

The Disconnect between "Language" and "Learning" and the burden of translation:

Consider the academic realm where a specific register of English often dominates the discourse. Much like navigating the complexities of a foreign language, students whose native tounges differ from this academic English may struggle to grasp nuanced arguments, interpret specialized terminologies, or effectively express their own ideas. This creates a barrier to entry, potentially hindering their ability to fully participate and excel in academic environments. The pressure to translate their thoughts and understanding into a non-native language can be immense. Students may spend an inordinate amount of time deciphering academic materials or formulating responses, diverting their focus from core concepts and critical thinking skills essential for academic success. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, frustration and even isolation potentially impacting their overall academic performance and self-esteem.

The constant struggle to keep up in a language-centric academic environment can have a detrimental effect on a student's mental well-being. Feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and depression can arise from the perception of falling behind or not being able to live up to their academic potential. In extreme cases, these pressures can contribute to student burnout, and mental health crises, including suicidal ideations.

AI: Democratizing education and Bridging divides.

Artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a potential equalizer in the face of language barriers within academia. AI-powered translation tools can bridge the gap not just between languages but also between social classes and castes. In India for example, access to English medium education has historically been concentrated within elite circles. This has perpetuated a system akin to what Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a champion of social equality critiqued- A system where caste serves to divide laborers rather than labor itself. Students from marginalized communities, despite their intellectual potential, may struggle with the dominant academic English used in higher education. AI-powered translation tools and writing assistance can empower these students by allowing them to focus on understanding core concepts rather than struggling to decipher the language. Real-time translation of lectures, textbooks, and assignments can level the playing field, fostering a more inclusive learning environment. By removing language barriers AI has the potential to dismantle these historical divides and empower students from all backgrounds to excel in academia based on merit, not on their socio-economic status.

Traditionally, success in academia is often been intertwined with fluency in a specific register of English. This creates an uneven playing field where students from privileged backgrounds who have access to quality English medium education have an advantage. AI-powered tools disrupt these dynamics.

John Rawls a philosopher, in his seminal work, "A Theory of Justice", proposed the concept of the "Veil of ignorance", This experiment asks individuals to imagine themselves entering society without knowing their social class, race, or any other predetermined advantages. Under this veil, individuals will be forced to design a just and equitable society, ensuring that success is based on effort and talent, not on the circumstances of one's birth. AI-powered tools embody this Rawlsian idea. By removing this arbitrary barrier to English fluency. AI allows students to be judged on their intellectual merit regardless of their background. This fosters a more equitable learning environment where everyone has the opportunity to excel based on their inherent abilities.

Addressing Concerns: AI and the Future of Learning

While the potential of AI to bridge the caste learning gap is undeniable, a few stakeholders may express skepticism. They might view the notion of AI as dismantling the social divides in education as a utopian ideal or harbor a notion that AI could lead to deskilling or decreased motivation in students. These concerns however can be easily mitigated.

AI tools and writing assistance should be envisioned as scaffolds, not as crutches. By removing the language barrier, students can devote their cognitive resources to comprehending intricate concepts rather than grappling with vocabulary and syntax. This fosters a cognitive space conducive to critical thinking analysis, and a deeper engagement with the material itself. AI-powered tools can also enhance student engagement by promoting active learning. Imagine a scenario where the users(in our case the students) receive real-time feedback on their writing or practice problem solving through AI-driven simulations. Such an interactive learning environment fosters a deeper understanding and a more dynamic educational experience.

Furthermore, AI can empower educators. AI-powered grading systems(with the right kinds of commands) can alleviate the burden of repetitive tasks, allowing teachers to dedicate more time to personalized feedback and student interactions. Additionally, AI can analyze student performance data to identify areas needing improvement and tailor instructions accordingly.

Finally addressing concerns about deskilling is crucial. While fluency in a dominant language in English remains valuable. AI can ensure that it does not become the sole determinant of academic success.

I agree! With this as we discussed a lot on this and I also had the same experience currently , Dominating of one language is directly going to hamper the learning of an individual who has the skill of critical thinking and skill of expression in their local languages, In India where dialect changes by every 5-10 km , the Academics should be more inclusive towards the local languages otherwise we are going to face an other kind of discrimination, inequality in Academics. Thanks
