Will AI become our drug of choice? – Are we all taking the “Soma” (A Brave New World) and falling slowly into a creative coma?

In today's fast-paced digital era, we are on the brink of a new frontier where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing various aspects of our lives. As we delve into this uncharted territory, it seems apt to draw parallels with Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel, "A Brave New World."

?

### The Brave New World of AI: The Benefits

?As gleaned from recent articles by Forbes, Simplilearn, and TechTarget, AI's benefits are manifold. AI helps reduce human error, a key factor that can lead to disastrous consequences in fields such as healthcare, finance, and aviation. It can take risks instead of humans, particularly in hazardous environments or situations, thereby safeguarding human lives.

?AI is available 24/7, unlike humans who require rest and breaks. This constant availability can greatly improve efficiency and productivity in various sectors. AI also excels at performing repetitive jobs, freeing up humans to engage in more creative and complex tasks. Furthermore, AI provides digital assistance, facilitating faster and more informed decisions. For businesses, AI facilitates seamless collaboration between enterprise systems and individuals, creating a next-generation workplace (HCL Technologies).

?But are we entering into “The Soma Dilemma”: AI and Human Creativity

?While the benefits of AI are clear, some concerns mirror those found in Huxley's "A Brave New World." The citizens of Huxley's futuristic society are fed 'Soma,' a drug that suppresses their emotions and individuality, leading to a lack of creativity and innovation.

?There is a fear that an over-reliance on AI could lead to a similar outcome. Will humans stop thinking for themselves? Will they cease generating meaningful links between subjects, hindering innovation?

?While AI can analyze vast amounts of data and make connections far beyond human capabilities, it does not possess innate creativity or the ability to think outside the box. These are uniquely human traits. In essence, AI can provide us with the tools and the canvas, but it is up to us to create the masterpiece.

?

However, there is a risk that as AI becomes more integrated into our lives, we may become less inclined to think critically and creatively, relying instead on AI to do the thinking for us. This could potentially lead to a stagnation in innovative thinking, much like the citizens in Huxley's world who rely on Soma.

As we move towards an increasingly AI-driven world, it is crucial to strike a balance. We must leverage the benefits of AI without compromising our inherent creativity and innovative spirit. We must ensure that we do not fall into the trap of becoming passive consumers of technology, but rather, use it as a tool to further enhance and cultivate our unique human capabilities. After all, unlike the inhabitants of Huxley's Brave New World, we have the choice not to take the 'Soma.'
