Is AI (Artificial Intelligence) creating a new breed of "sheeple"?
One of my favorite things to do is to "scan" the internet in search of a new discovery.
I love it when I casually stumble across a new vacation destination, a new time-saving product, a hilarious video clip, or the latest in technological products. Unfortunately, my searches have been reduced incredibly by the advances in AI.
Now that so many companies are using AI to "help" consumers with their browsing, I am unable to randomly discover all the wonderful products and services I have found in the past. These so-called search bots have taken over so many of my frequently traveled websites and I only seem to see the same types of items over and over.
For Example...
Yes, I did recently purchase a used vehicle. And yes, I did search for weeks to find the right vehicle for my family and me, but the search is over. The car was purchased yet I receive new car deals daily on my web searches and car dealerships, finance companies, and car locator sites flood my feeds. I wish I could tell the "bot god's" to please stop the madness. I do not need to purchase any more vehicles at this time.
The AI bots have also suggested so many Amazon and eBay products because of my search for prices of computer monitors. I simply wanted to research how much I should try to sell my used monitor on eBay. I needed to know what would be a fair price to market something I no longer needed. It was sold weeks ago but I continue to get ads for monitors several times per week.
Can we find a way to tell the bots that we no longer need them to suggest certain items? Is there a way to tell AI that I would rather you not suggest items that are specifically designed for me? I like personalized service but I really love it when I stumble upon something myself. To me, it feels as though I discover a whole new secret world and I like the anticipation of sharing new discoveries to my friends.
Well, what is the question?
So my question is if AI is limiting our ability to search or discover new things, does that mean that we no longer have the freedom of choice? Are we being herded into subsets of people due to what we search for online? I would hate it if we are only shown certain items, articles, viewpoints, or services based on what AI thinks will be of interest to us. I do enjoy it when they show items that interest me, but I would rather take a chance on my own abilities to find my own products and services.
When AI takes over the search functions of our web experiences they take away a part of our free time. We now spend time looking at things they want us to look at instead of having time to discover a new interest. I do not wish to become a product of AI "profiling", and do not want to be considered one of the "sheeple" they regulate. We all need to realize that when AI takes over our choices and selections in the name of "enhanced consumer experience", it is basically rendering us too lazy to make our own choices.
What I really wonder is if anyone else feels the same way? Now that society is begging for AI to boost our efficiencies and create more time for us to enjoy life, will we really enjoy "our" designed life or the life that the AI molds us to live? At what point will AI go too far in designing our futures, or better yet, at what point are we going to give up our freedom and allow AI to guide us through life.
What do you think?...

Great question, Adonis. I'm preparing to research some new topics, and it didn't occur to me to wonder whether search systems will help or hinder. I think I'll start with a good old-fashioned person to get me started. Thanks for asking!
